K&L Notes

Thibaut Chamfort has taken the helm at this wonderful multi-generational estate property situated in the village of Sablet. Making wines from a variety of terroirs including - Rasteau, Plan de Dieu, Vacqueyras and of course Sablet, he uses organic practices and minimal intervention in his winemaking practices. Concrete tanks are used for fermentation and mix of tank and large foudre for elevage. Thibaut is making pure and decisive wines from the variety of his holdings. The Vacqueyras comes from a small parcel 20 minutes south of Sablet on the historic plateau known as "Les Garrigues" which is made up of primarily clay-limestone soils with lots of tiny pebbles. The wine is composed of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault and boasts an opaque color with saturated red berry fruit and loads of spice. A great example of the appellation and one of Thibaut's best wines.

I would never have guessed this for a sub $20 wine. Verquiere's Vacqueyras offers the complexity, depth and weight of a pricier wine and reinforces why we stand behind our direct imports! Having offered the wines of this estate for several vintages and experienced their consistency and quality, we're smitten with this intoxicating blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Although it shines with meats, cheeses and the like, I found it outstanding on its own. Serious juice.

Vacqueyras is one of the most underrated appellations in southern Rhone. For those in the know, its name is synonymous with quality wines that come at fractions of the price of Chateauneuf du Pape. This particular offering from Domaine de Verquière showcases marvelous tension holding lush berries and lovely violets in perfect harmony. The smell of stones and pebbles from the soil in which the grapes mature serves to offset the slight sweetness on the finish, giving the wine unparalleled finesse for this price range.

This is fresh and juicy with flavors and aromas of berries, cherries, licorice, spice and cracked pepper in beautiful proportion. The wine is complex and elegant with a lively middle and a clean, palate clearing finish that would compliment most any type of food. Here is an easy to drink and tasty bargain.

Vacqueyras is one of those appellations that people see on the shelves periodically but maybe don't recognize the same way for its overall quality as more famous regions like Gigondas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The primary area in the appellation is a plateau called "Les Garrigues" just below the base of the famed nearby limestone mountains known as the Dentelles de Montmirail. The soils are made up of the alluvium from the last glacial era and it is chock full of limestone-clay and mounds of decidedly much smaller pebbles than the ones you would see in nearby Chateauneuf. The vineyards are all surrounded by the dense forest also known as garrigue, which imparts so much of its aromas to the nearby grapes. Verquiere is best known in our store for one of our most rocking Cotes du Rhones and their homes estate Rhone-Villages level Sablet. The Vacqueyras may be where it's at though, as this is an exceptional site imparting great fruit intensity, weight and floral and herb accents. If you're not familiar with the wines of Vacqueyras, this is a great place to start as Verquiere consistently delivers some of our staff favorites and this is no exception.

I’m in love with this wine from the first sniff, some much complexity, an intriguing mix of dark fruits; smoke and earth just thrill you. On the palate you can feel the sun’s rays invigorating the grapes, not making them sweet but making them complete, the texture is faceted not smooth and luxurious this wine has character, it tastes like wine to me, it’s the kind of wine I love. The finish shows spice, blackberry, intrigue and a long lasting reminder of this wine’s origins. This will go into my cellar.

This fabulous, grown up Rhone has not only great texture and poise but also the wonderful, wild blackberry fruit that makes the wine so fun to drink. It is fermented in concrete, keeping all of the soul while sacrificing none of the clean concentration of this sunny, southern red. This is perfect wine to go with grilled meats, especially sausages on the grill!
