Coming from cooler, granite soils, the 2016 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Roure is a serious barrel sample that should check in near the top of the appellation. It has plenty of oak as well as terrific dark fruits, spice, and meatiness, with a full-bodied, concentrated, tannic style on the palate. The cellar is going to be your friend with this one.
(raised in 20% new oak) Brilliant purple. Powerful, mineral-accented red and dark berry preserve, Asian spice, incense and floral pastille aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a minerally nuance with air. Silky, densely packed and incisive on the palate, offering intense Chambord, boysenberry and spicecake flavors given spine and lift by a vein of juicy acidity. Finishes extremely floral and impressively long, displaying resonating spiciness and smooth, harmonious tannins. (JR)
More structured and intense than the Thalabert this year, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Roure comes from the gravel slopes around Gervans in the northern portion of the appellation. Crushed stone and cherry notes mark the nose, followed by a medium to full-bodied wine of great power, vibrancy and length. (JC)
