Bright, golden-tinged yellow. Highly perfumed nose of yellow flowers, mango, passion fruit, crystallized papaya and fresh ginger. At once silky and crystalline, offering outstanding finesse to the rich, honeyed flavors of grapefruit, minty guava and sweet spices. The palate-saturating finish really mounts and builds while remaining focused and energetic. A deep, rich, round, well-balanced wine that showcases magnificently why the Eichberg is one of Alsace’s three or four best grands crus for Gewürztraminer. Outstanding stuff, and a real step up in depth, refinement and depth compared to the other wines I tasted this year from Baur. This wine is rated as medium-sweet on the four-point scale on the back label. (ID)
Notes of ripe peach have an edge of Damask rose to them on the nose. The palate comes in with an almost viscous roundness, carrying both sweetness and pleasant phenolic bitterness that sets off some of the richness. This is medium sweet and full-on, brimming with the ripest aromatic fruit. Great now but certain to develop. Drink through 2028. (AK)
