K&L Notes

Owned by the Tagliabue family since 1979, the wine growing on the estate dates back to the 17th century. Known for their Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti, the name "Salvi" refers to the supposed health-giving effects of this terroir. Villa Poggio Salvi's modern winery is partly subterranean and set within the contours of the hillsides.

We all talk about the best wine for the money, and this is a beautiful example. Due to it being a direct import for us here at K&L, this is a steal. The current vintage of Poggio Salvi "Caspagnolo" Chianti will surprise you with its depth. The nose opens with notes of under-ripe plum that is softened by subtle notes of fig. The bouquet continues with inviting tobacco, slight tar, and olive. Its palate softens towards more subtle dark fruit, grilled meat, and a lingering tobacco finish. This is a wine to enjoy on its own, or with a steak dinner.

Viva Colli Senesi! The 2017 offering of Poggio Salvi's "Caspagnolo" Chianti is charming, dry and dark fruited with bright acidity balanced by earthy rusticity. Mostly comprised of Sangiovese, the wine is blended with Merlot from the Estate in Siena, which rounds the palate somewhat. Truly a wonderful value, this wine is a perfect accompaniment to any weekday meal or holiday party.

This little wine transports you to the heart of Tuscany. While sipping this red beauty you can imagine you’re in a local trattoria enjoying a simple lunch while looking at the rolling hillsides. Time has stopped, or at least left your mind. All that matters is the moment; a plate of meat and cheese, rustic bread, a good friend, casual conversation, all washed down with a lovely local wine like this. Ciao!

The nose of this wine shows a deep, plumy character, segueing into lots of dark fruit and hints of earth and spice. On the palate this wine’s depth will make you look twice this is not your ordinary Chianti at this price. The flavors are a complex compote of plum, spiced cherries, earth, hints of smoke and a bit of garrique. The finish shows a supple density that is balanced with hints of polished tannins, long, long finish, this is a real bargain.

You'd never guess the incredible low price of this wine based on the structure. It drinks like a Chianti 3x the price. The backbone of this wine is commanding, but provides a spectacular scaffold for the fruit and savory forest notes. Decant for an hour and enjoy with food. Or feel free to leave it in your cellar for a while. It'll just keep getting better and better.

A sturdy, mixed berry fruited and slightly foresty Chianti from the Siena Hills, Villa Poggio Salvi brings solid value for the price point. Sure, you can pair with any of your favorite Tuscan inspired dishes, but feel free to mix it up with a marinated skirt steak, grilled sausage or pork burger.

Chianti Colli Senesi is perhaps Chianti's most unsung subzone, located on the hills surrounding Siena and I love what his area can do to Sangiovese. This Poggio Salvi is just bang for your buck, medium- bodied, dark fruit and a little bit of Siena on the palate. Buy a couple for you next Bar-B –Que, bugers or fowl would love this.

Bright aromas of strawberries and black cherries with a touch of tobacco and smoke. This wine really opens up with a bit of air and definitely tastes far beyond what the price would suggest. Great structure, balance, and loads of complexities for a killer price.

We're so glad that we have the privilege of importing this impressive Chianti from Poggio Salvi. It's a lot of wine that definitely exceeds its price and this 2017 is really delicious. Expressive earthy plum and cherry fruit aromas with a hint of cedar join a round palate with bright flavors and plenty of acidity. It outshines the typical bistro red and pairs with a wide variety of meats and stews.
