K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "The bouquet possesses a lovely mix of richness, fruit and savory like blackberry pie; quite comforting. On the palate we find intriguing hints of pink rose, briar, red currant, violets and spice; this Pinot has an alluring silky texture with deep flavors of black cherry, baking spice and a whisper of licorice. It’s nicely structured and lingers beautifully on the finish. The fourth year of a drought gave us very low yields across California, resulting in wines with great depth and concentration. 2015 was the earliest and fastest harvest ever for us here at Calera. After hand harvesting, the grapes were fermented with native yeast in small open-top fermenters. After fourteen days, the wines were pressed, settled over night, and then moved to Calera’s barrel cellar. The wine was aged without racking, in French oak barrels, 10% new, for eleven months. The individual barrel lots were combined prior to bottling."

Calera has always been at the top of my list for amazingly priced, classic, varietally correct Central Coast Pinot Noirs! This wonderful old-world style pinot noir is the perfect example of how beautifully elegant California pinot noir can be when treated with the right subtlety and tact. Pure notes of pomegranate, bright cherry and ripe raspberry perfectly complement the spicier, warm, savory flavors that materialize on the finish.

Josh Jensen's Calera Pinot Noir has long been one of my favorites in the price range and his 2015 is really impressive. Thanks to very low yields, this is an especially rich and complex wine with loads of spiced red fruit flavors, ample weight and acidity that drinks nicely but will cellars for a few years as well. This is an outstanding pick for Pinot Noir lovers.

Calera have definitely smashed it out of the park with this 2015 anniversary release of Pinot Noir! What a way to celebrate this California icon's 40th Birthday! This stunning bottling is made up of fruit sourced from some of the very best Pinot Noir vineyards on the central coast including: Bien Nacido, Sierra Madre and Soloman Hills. Fruit from these top quality sources are typically reserved for most winery's vineyard designate releases that generally sell for $40-$60...but here the Calera team have expertly blended these parcels into a seamless expression of coastal California Pinot Noir. 2015 was a small but super high quality vintage and this wine shows it. Exotic berry fruits, Asian spice, bramble notes, hints of forest floor and dried Porcini. The palate is generous with succulent fruit, velvety tannins and juicy acidity. In the finish stony minerals and more savory nuances fade in and out with the bramble fruits and subtle spice. Such a complete and expressive wine that truly shows Calera's masterful handling of Pinot Noir. With all the press on this wine and its incredibly reasonable price point there is sure to be plenty of buzz around it. We're taking everything we can get our hands on...I encourage you to do the same and I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

The nose or this wine is full of a wild, gamy character that then opens into bits of strawberry and hints of earth, very complex for this price point Pinot. On the palate the wine is medium-full bodied with a smooth, supple feel but this isn’t a highly polished wine it feels natural, fresh and real. The flavors show bits of earth and leather but those flavors are well integrated to the supple fruit. The finish shows good acidity, nice balance and the flavors hold true throughout. This is a really wonderful wine, try it with roasted chicken, and I’d make sure it was cellar temperature.
    Drink from 2018 to 2021

Calera's Central Coast Pinot Noir is always a fantastic bottle that won't break the bank. With a lot of concentration and depth from the 2015 vintage, this Pinot Noir has richness of fruit with a bit of savory and spice notes as well. The palate has lovely floral and blackberry notes and a nice structure that can hold up in the cellar for a few years, but this is drinking fantastically now. Get this awesome value while you can!

I was really impressed by the quality of this Pinot from long-established winery Calera. Lots of minerality here really sets this wine apart from others of the region. The elegance of the wine should come as no surprise given the great set of well-known vineyards this bottling comes from. A unique blend of fruit from Santa Barbara up to Monterey comes together to make a wine unlike any other on the Domestic shelf. There is a slightly riper flavor profile here, but there is a lift as well, which keeps the balance on point. A lighter style Pinot, but incredibly expressive at the same time.

I really like the style of this Pinot Noir: bright fruit, generous but texturally light, refreshing, delicious. while it does not include fruit from the Calera estate, it does include some serious central coast vineyard site, including Bien Nacido, amongst others. For under $25, you won't do much better for Pinot Noir from anywhere. Great stuff!
