    The evolution of wine dramatically owes itself to single-minded men and women who, against all odds and imagined gods, planted and cultivated grapes where so many had struggled and failed before. Picture if you will the lava-strewn slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily's landmark and somewhat hot-tempered active volcano, where Andrea Franchetti constructed his winery and proceeded to cultivate both the indigenous Nerello Mascalese and a few other international grapes. The Passorosso is a truly elegant rendition of Nerello Mascalese as defined by its volcanic terroir, delivering exotic aromas of wild strawberry, desert rose and mountain scrub, with tinges of cherry, allspice and leather on the palate, etched by bright acidity and enticingly smooth tannins. A marvel of a wine that lovers of textural Pinot Noir will deeply appreciate.

    This is a delicious, fun and new Italian red. This relatively rare 100% Nerello Mascalese from the island of Sicily is made Burgundian in style, and pours out a beautiful translucent ruby red. It has rich, concentrated flavors of cherry kirsch, licorice, orange peel, and baking spice with mineral undertones, plush grippy tannins and a surprisingly long acid-driven finish. top pic

    One word for this wine: wow. Just when I thought I had a hand on Etna wines, this wine came along and blew what I thought I knew out of the water. This is beautiful expression of layered strawberry and cranberry red-fruit notes, accented by crushed black pepper and garrigue. Textured with full, bright acidity and the faintest touches of crackly tannin it can feel like dark, earthy Pinot Noir at one moment and brilliant, cool-climate Syrah at the next. Totally accessible and utterly delicious I can’t even tell you how much I loved this wine. It’s seriously unbelievable.

    The rosso wines of Etna have an unmistakable and alluring blend of herbs and smokiness. They tend to hint at other grapes you’re more familiar with (Grenache?) but ultimately stand on their own. I had the chance to visit the area in 2016 and was wildly impressed by the lay of the land. While there was much debate over who had the best terroir, I was struck by the overall variety of styles and enamored of the varietals. It’s quite an amazing experience to walk these vineyards while watching plumes of smoke ooze from the mountain top. That visual really creates a special feeling. So does this wine!

    This wine has been notably improving over the years. Whereas in a few past vintages I have found the wine a bit too forward and obvious, there is more nuance, earth and character evident this year. In terms of flavor, think Pinot Noir like fruit, but a bit drier and chewier, Barolo like structure but not quite as austere. Delicious Etna wine for your seared ahi tuna or marinated grilled swordfish.

    While I wouldn't give this wine to a novice just getting into drinking wine, it is a fantastic choice for someone more experienced looking for something different and absolutely delicious. Focused and dry, this wine reminded me of Grenache in fruit and brightness, but it is much more structured and stern than a Rhone. I liked the balance that this dichotomy produced. Wine adventurers, take note of this one.

    Passopisciaro Passorosso is a stunning wine the nose is full of smoke, strawberry compote, leather, spice and gives you the sensation of having a lot more to give I couldn’t describe everything, it’s just overflowing. On the palate this wine makes a very bold statement, it fills your mouth with a luscious density that is a new dimension for Etna Rosso, so much richer than most, supple, giving yet still showing its structure. The flavors are saturated; waves of sweet, strawberry fruit followed by flows of herb and leather then more fruit and again more fruit. This is superbly balanced, poised and focus. A truly outstanding wine!
