This modestly priced Aglianico is a solid introduction to the varietal. While it lacks the concentration, weight and tannic heft of older vines Aglianico, it makes up the difference with its modest price, lively, high toned berry fruit and juicy palate that really comes alive when paired with food. Great for backyard bbqs and Summer picnics.

This wine crept up on me like an elegant Caremma from the northern Piedmont. Though the grape here is Aglianico, not Nebbiolo, I could see how they can be cut from a similar cloth. The wines color may be a lighter shade of red but don’t be fooled. The power and intensity of the grape is clearly on display. Sour cherry, roasted herbs, and ripe but firm tannins greet the taster. I especially enjoyed the hint of pepper and spice on the finish. This is a must have for more rustic, country style dishes.

Aglianico ranks as one of the best regional grapes to emerge from southern Italy in the last few years. Produced primarily in Campania, this grape loves volcanic soils and always picks up subtle smoky mineral nuances when planted on it. Feudi di San Gregorio has brought us some pretty legendary Aglianico wines from their top DOC Taurasi wines but this value oriented one captures the spirit and essence of the grape beautifully. Plush black plum and raspberry fruit, a bit of mineral nuance, suave tannins and white peppery spices emerge on the palate and give you that beautiful sense of place. Extremely versatile the "Rubrato" delivers the goods and makes the perfect foil for some classic pastas like Cacio e Pepe or even some simply grilled meats.

A serious, grippy little Aglianico, the Feudi Di San Gregorio Rubrato shows a bright, cranberry like quality to the fruit, with a pleasant bitter snap towards the moderately tannic finish. In the best sense of the phrase, this is a classic Italian food wine that should pair nicely with any number of dishes on your summer table.

The nose of this wine is bold, focused and full of saturated fruit flavors, blackberry, blueberry, cassis with hints of anise and spice. The wine has much more lift and freshness than what I would have thought from the deeply complex fruit character. On the palate this wine is powerful, it is Aglianico but Aglianico’s fierce tannins are tamed here, the wine is smooth, rich but muscular lots of round, rich flesh carries loads of cassis and blackberry fruit gliding across your tongue, it is well balanced but very soft and smooth on the palate. This is Aglianico so you do see a bit of tannin emerge on the edge, you feel it a bit in your cheeks but even from someone as tannin sensitive as I am it was a marginal appearance. This is a really good bottle of wine for the price point, powerful yet fresh and lively, perfect for a backyard BBQ.
    Drink from 2018 to 2022
