Tasting Notes

Jacques Coipel worked in the petroleum industry until 2002, when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at approximately 1,200 feet above sea level on a mix of clay, limestone, and gravel. At this elevation, cooling winds from the north lend a crispness to the wines in the form of bright, red fruit qualities in the reds and vibrant apple tones in the whites. Around the same time, Jacques's son, Julien, began studying winemaking in Switzerland and New Zealand (with Te Mata, one of our favorites). Julien returned to Ste. Croix in 2010 and began working side by side with his father. Julien's lighter but more technical touch makes for wines that are great expressions of the Valreas terroir.

    This is certainly the softer side of Mas de Sainte Croix! Fresh, bright Grenache and Carignan fruit dominate and the addition of Cinsault softens the fruit and adds beautiful aromatics. The mineral profile is prominent and the acidity lasting. This is a great warm weather red. Put a slight chill on it and enjoy while dining al fresco.

    A beautiful and approachable Rhone blend, this vintage of Douceur de Fruit jumps out of the glass with a bouquet of of bright cranberry, and blackberry, reminiscent of a winter jam. The fruit fades into more savory notes of cracked pepper and purple florals that I most associate with Granache-dominant wines like this one. The palate is light and not as bright as the nose. The blackberry comes through with notes of ash, white pepper, and savory salted pork. This is an absolutely ideal wine to have with a plate of cheese and charcuterie or roasted pork.

    60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 20% Carignane. The 2016 "Douceur de Fruit" is a beautifully light, delicate and aromatic offering. "Douceur" in french translates to "sweetness" or "pleasantness" and it certainly offers that in spades-- the wine is pure fruit, notes of strawberry, raspberry and hibiscus. It is a refreshing change of pace to have a Rhone blend that omits Syrah. Don't get me wrong-- I absolutely love Syrah, but it's peppery, vanilla qualities can overwhelm more floral grapes such as Cinsault. Excellent value, perfect as a cocktail wine or with light appetizers.
