Tasting Notes

Jacques Coipel worked in the petroleum industry until 2002, when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at approximately 1,200 feet above sea level on a mix of clay, limestone, and gravel. At this elevation, cooling winds from the north lend a crispness to the wines in the form of bright, red fruit qualities in the reds and vibrant apple tones in the whites. Around the same time, Jacques's son, Julien, began studying winemaking in Switzerland and New Zealand (with Te Mata, one of our favorites). Julien returned to Ste. Croix in 2010 and began working side by side with his father. Julien's lighter but more technical touch makes for wines that are great expressions of the Valreas terroir. The "Tendresse" is equal parts Grenache and Syrah with notes of raspberry coulis, ripe cherries and aromas of alder wood. The wine picks up density and weight as it opens, showing peppery and Asian spices and sweeter riper fruit. This is a polished Côtes-du-Rhône with a beautiful rhythm that will continue to evolve in your glass. Right now, it is perfect for all grilled fare, whether it be savory spiced lamb chops or herb crusted pork chops.

I heard the story of Jaques and Julien Coipel long before I ever had the chance to taste their wines, and it intrigued me greatly. A father who made a 180 degree life change from the world of petroleum to old-school wine making in the Southern Rhone, and a son who earned his viticultural chops with the superstars at Te Mata in New Zealand before returning home to join familial forces. I naturally snapped up a bottle of the "Tendresse" the day it landed, and oh boy did it live up to my expectations. Light and playful, with traces of cracked white pepper, mountain strawberry, and galangal (Chinese ginger). Paired up with a grilled goat cheese and heirloom tomato flat bread, the bottle went down so quick I thought it must be leaking.

Mas De Saint Croix will always have a special place in my heart, as it was one of the first direct imports I tried when I first started working at K&L and fell in love with. I mean high quality Cotes Du Rhone Villages for under 15 bucks, what's not to love? The 2015 vintage of Tendresse was fantastic, and the 2016 vintage is nothing short of fantastic. With savory notes of creamy licorice and strawberries, this bottle is a solid every day winner.
