K&L Notes

The Hissez O is the pinnacle of production for the domaine. Sourced from the highest-altitude, lowest-yielding parcel, the wine is composed of 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 5% Cinsault. The Hissez O is also aged in large, older demi-muid barrels, adding richness and texture to the wine. As with all things Reserve d'O, the farming is certified both Ecocert Organic and Demeter Biodynamic. (Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Buyer) *Biodynamic, Natural Wine*

The cold, dry winds of the Mistral and Tramontane have been known to howl like ravenous wolves as they funnel and pour through the mountains and vales of the Languedoc Roussillon, an incessant howling known in the past to erode the psyche and render sane men mad. Of course those same willful winds work wonders in the vineyards, clearing the vines and fruit of pests and generating crystal blue skies and that pervasive sunlight that long attracted both artists and winemakers to the region. Marie and Frederic Chauffray fell in love with the elevated plateau of Terrasses du Larzac, and their pristine biodynamic wines are the natural result of their passion—the Hissez O, their finest cuvee, is a robust wine imbued with a towering sense of place, delivering a fragrance and supple flavors of blackcurrants, raspberries, stones warmed by the sun, licorice and yes, potted violets. A deeply gratifying and joyful wine to pair with wintry beef and root vegetable stews.

Their highest end, Syrah dominant bottling, Hissez O hits on all cylinders in 2016! I loved the nose, with its pure red fruit, tangy dried fruit nuances and Syrah spice. In terms of flavor, freshness, and feel, with its firm, but not over-reaching tannins, this is top quality Syrah, through and through. I cannot think of a better Syrah dominant blend in the store for under $40, let alone under $30. My highest recommendation for this fine wine from the good folks at Domaine de la Reserve d'O!

This has turned a corner and is absolutely singing right now. The wine is big and lush with creamy boysenberry and other dark fruits, a touch of licorice and plenty of husky grip on the finish. Although bold and rich this is poised and fresh with wonderful balance of fruit, structure and length.

Richer and more extravagant than the Reserve bottling, the Hissez O has so much depth, that it would love to have a little more time. Where the Reserve is generous and reminiscent of top notch Chateauneuf, the Syrah component of the Hissez O shines brightly and expresses more of that Cote-Rotie aspect. The vintage was short this year due to drought but we received 15% of the total production of the wine this year - 15 cases!! This is always a special wine that will reward those with a little patience but those on the hunt for a Northern Rhone-style substitute to drink now would still be quite pleased if served with a hearty rich meal.

On the initial approach, the classic white pepper lights up the taste buds, followed by a helping of crushed wild strawberries and black fruit flavors. The nose is mostly garrigue-- keeping the spicy, fruity tastes to come a delightful surprise. The aromatics are transportive-- whisking you off to the stony, windswept plateaus and terraces of Larzac. Finishes long with very silky tannin and a touch of leather. And organic to boot!
