We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' successes. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, and we immediately struck up a relationship. Marie owned a wine shop but always wanted to pursue growing, so she and her husband Frederic began looking for a vineyard. It took ten years to find the perfect plot. The vineyard, which is planted on limestone gravel, is on a unique site 400 meters above sea level in the Terrasses du Larzac sub-region of Languedoc. The farming is certified both Ecocert Organic and Demeter Biodynamic. Representing the best qualities of the estate the "Reserve d'O" is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Syrah with 10% Cinsault.     Some of my all-time favorite reds (and whites) have come from the Languedoc region and this wine is a prime example of why I'm such a fan of the region - value. With layer after layer of earth, red berries, subtle spice, ripe fruit and fine tannins, while still being lively on its feet. I found myself consistently reaching for the glass to have another sip, and I think you will as well. Serious value here!

    One of my all time favorite direct imports is back and bigger than ever with the stellar 2016 vintage. With Grenache and Syrah being the most prominent varieties in this blend, i found beautifully executed flavors of plum, dark cherries, and hints of the earth... It reminds me of some of my favorite every day drinking Rhone blends, but with a much firmer richness and that may have to bo with their biodynamic farming practices. La Reserve D'O slays being the medium to fuller bodied red it is, and at 20 dollars this is an outstanding value. You don't wanna pass this one up.

    This wine from the Languedoc is layered and alive and full of flavor—blueberries, blackberries, brambly forest notes, and baking spice on a medium body with nice, firm tannins. Owners Marie and Frederic Chauffray farm organically and biodynamically, and make wines with real heart. A roasted, herbed pork tenderloin would do it justice.

    This is a fascinating hypothetical hybrid of a Northern Rhone meets Southern Rhone wine. You can clearly discern aspects from both regions. With nearly equal parts of Syrah and Grenache (rounded out with Cinsault), each noble varietal gets a chance to offer its own imprint on the wine. Hints of blueberries, strawberries, minerality, and herbs come forth from the glass. My notes kept switching from a “poor man’s” Crozes-Hermitage to a “poor man’s” Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In either case, this represents a tremendous value at the price point for either type of wine. I give this a strong “buy” recommendation.

    Aromas show plenty of generous, gently warmed berries, but with layers and nuances that keep you returning to the glass. Forward on the palate, with the Syrah in particular standing out, this is a ripe, yet honest expression, with tasty flavors and good grip on the finish. The good folks at the Domaine de la Reserva d'O are great examples of the type of talent and originality you can find these days in the Languedoc!

    This opens with rocky aromas and a medley of ripe red fruits then finishes with sweet black cherry and ripe, fine tannins. The wine is packed, intense and quite light on its feet given the considerable raw material provided by the great vineyard site and organic practices. A wine of this quality for under 20 buck is pretty amazing.

    This is now our fourth vintage working with the wines of Marie and Fred Chauffray and each year I find the wines more satisfying and detailed than each previous vintage. The 2016 structurally walks me back to the original 2013 release, and find it as mouthfilling in a way that summons my initial thoughts of youthful Chateauneuf - but without the warming high octane profile. This new wine has structure but so much fruit that is is utterly beguiling. The Reserve speaks volumes of its terroir, when every year I find the similar notes of plush raspberry fruit surrounded by notes of herbes de Provence. It is the vintage that changes and plays with the intensity. The 2016 was very good but very low yield and you can feel it in the concentration. It does not have quite the heaviness though as the acid keep the wine lifted and fresh on the palate. Each year as I taste a new release of Reserve d'O, it affirms my original thought that this is one of the best Direct Import wines I have found in these last few years.
