Winemaker notes: "A bouquet of dark, berried, inky fruit with plenty of sawdusty/smoky oak. While it’s warm with alcohol it remains smooth, supple and persistent. It’s all black currant, bay leaves and aforementioned oak on the palate. Tannin is fine-grained. This is a complete and harmonious wine with great persistence of flavor. Bright and delicious, speaking of contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet. Ready to drink now or for enjoying the rewards of cellaring for the next 5-7 years. Barrel aged in French oak for 12 months (5% new oak, 95% old oak) followed by 6 months stainless steel . 100% Cabernet Sauvignon."

    Coonawarra is one of the most unique sites in the world for Cabernet and this wine reflects the flavors of their unique Terra Rossa soils. Australians are making Cabernets that are medium bodied, and they very intentionally set out to make them fresh and bright. It certainly has the fine tannin building up in the background to remind you it's Cab, and the fruit and herbal notes create a lengthy, complex package. The initial barrel aging this wine undergoes provides roundness and power, and the following six months in stainless steel brings a youthful quality to the wine. There are no holes in this wine, it encompasses the whole mouth, and you are left wanting for nothing. Another fantastic vintage from this incredible winemaking team.

    This is typically amongst my favorite Aussie Cabs, showing off plenty of ripe fruits but never sacrificing classic Cabernet style and structure. Aromas of red fruit and eucalyptus trees lead to a fresh, fruit forward palate, with moderate tannins that provide just a bit of welcome grip at the mid palate and towards the finish.

    The Phoenix from Penley Estate has the big, open knit boisterous quality that people love in an Australian wine, but still finishes dry and clean. I love the brambly blackberry fruit, the good grip and and richness of this Coonawarra cab. This will be great with all sorts of grilled meat, but especially with beef!
