K&L Notes

A winery like no other, Montes has driven Chile's ultra-premium wine image from the outset. Since 1988 founder Aurelio Montes and his partners have captivated us with wines of the highest quality and singular design, setting a global standard to follow. Montes Winery brings Chile's most unique vineyard sites to life capturing their expression through disciplined winemaking, modern technology, and meticulous attention to detail. The vineyards that produce the grapes for the Montes Alpha Pinot Noir are located in the Casablanca, Zapallar, and Leyda Valleys, all located in the Aconcagua Coast wine region. All of the vineyards are trained to vertical shoot position and drip irrigated, and yields range from 7,000 to 8,000 kg/hectare. The grapes come from coastal vineyards-Casablanca is 25 km from the Pacific, Leyda is 15 km, and Zapallar is just 7 km from the sea. This affords the grapes great freshness, minerality, and cold zone typicity and enables them to obtain the most elegant expression of Chilean Pinot Noir. The soils in this region are granitic with different percentages of clay from the Coastal Range that contributes elegance, creaminess, and unique terroir to the wine.

Beautiful aromatics of fresh strawberries and red cherries fill the glass. Hints of rose petals follow adding a subtle floral note. The wine is medium weight on the palate with fresh ripe berry character. Additionally, the wine reveals hints of forest floor and wood spice adding additional levels of complexity. This wine seems a hypothetical cross between Russian River Valley and Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. I’m amazed at the level of quality of this wine. I’ve been a fan of the Montes Alpha wines for quite some time and their popularity is well deserved. Such high quality Pinot Noir at this price point is nearly impossible to match.

The nose is full of a creamy, sweetness that reminds me of a cherry/plum cobbler. On the palate the wine is lush, round and rolls across your palate while still showing good acidity. There, besides its rich fruit character it begins to show signs of a savory, stemmy complexity that adds a plus to the fruit. The finish is easy, balanced but for me this wine seems to be more of a cocktail pinot, nothing wrong with that it just seems really easy to drink out of a glass and one wouldn’t need a fork for assistance.
    Drink from 2018 to 2020

What a value in Pinot Noir! If you are looking for a great wine to have a glass of after work, this dark fruited, easy drinking, extroverted Montes Alpha from the Aconcagua Valley is a perfect choice. This is velvety and easy going, but it does not have any residual sugar weighing it down or excessive alcohol to diminish the pleasure. A great choice for a red wine to enjoy on its own!

Fans of the New-World style of Pinot will undoubtedly love this one. This wine shows lovely dark fruit and a fresh palate. I expected the rich fruit to be accompanied by a softer, fatter mouthfeel, but there is a lot of lift and life here. California Pinot lovers who are getting tired of the ever increasing prices will be ecstatic to come across this deal.

Chile continues to make great strides with their Pinot Noirs. Having tasted them for over a decade, it's enlightening to see all the progress that has been made, involving everything from vineyard sites, to ideal harvest times, cooperage choices and other winemaking decisions. The 2015 Montes Pinot, sourced from the coastal portion of Aconcagua not too far from the twin coastal cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, shows tasty dark cherry fruits, nicely weighted, with a clean, foresty and subtly savory side. Very well made PN for under $17!
