K&L Notes

We've been keeping an eye on the Torti family since we met them years ago in Italy and have been fans ever since. Their Pinot Noir is a rare gem and a champion for the varietal in Northern Italy. Crafted in a style that would make many in Oregon and Sonoma jealous at this kind of pricing, it has quickly become a staff and customer favorite at K&L, especially with the terrific new 2017 release.

As a self proclaimed Pinotphile, I'm always on the hunt for a new pinot that's coming from another region or country that I don't tend to have much pinot from. The Torti from Italy is a fantastic buy, and it's such an easy sipper too. I can easily see this part of my lineup for a big thanksgiving haul. And for being under 15 dollars, you seriously can't go wrong... Worth a whirl in every sense of the word.

Anyone looking for an outstanding Pinot Noir value will definitely want to purchase this latest release from the Torti Family. While there are a handful of top tier Italian Pinot Noirs, they are pricey and can't deliver the bang-for-the-buck that this one does. It's packed with a rounded palate of rich and savory red fruit flavors and a nice touch of acidity that keeps it fresh and lively.

I was immediately impressed with this wine based on the aromatics alone. You are greeted by a waft of fresh, bright bowl of red cherries and strawberries. The wine is reasonably translucent revealing an elegant, medium-weight body. Freshly picked, juicy cherries are expressed on the palate followed by a long slow finish that begs for the next sip. I can’t remember the last time I tasted a value driven Italian Pinot Noir that was this flat out delicious. I’m putting several bottles in the cupboard for casual Tuesday night dinners.

The nose of this wine is full of strawberry compote, laced with a bit of spice and leather. On that palate this wine has a lushness that just flows across your palate but it is sparked by a balanced acidity and hints of tannin, it’s supple but with a backbone. The flavors carry on the strawberry flavors but the wine begins to show more savory character, hints of leather, and the tannins focus and lift. The wine has an eminent drinkability that immediately makes you want to just sit down drink the entire bottle by yourself, but you should resist and share, it will make your friends happy and think you’re a Sommelier!

No Torti, No Party. That's what we always say here in Redwood City. The '17 is loaded up with dark fruit that just about any CA wino will love and the body has that classic light pinot feel. At this amazing price it is sure to please your guests and your wallet at your next soiree.

Finding a sub $20 Pinot Noir worth any merit is difficult these days, but finding a sub $15 that is undoubtedly enjoyable is near impossible. Torti has taken a grape uncommon in Italy and made it worth while. We took their motto "No Torti, no party" to heart the other night at our staff BBQ and cracked open a bottle or two. It was fresh, lively and great with all the foods and fixings we had before us. It is smooth with juicy red plums and a hidden bit of spice from time in barrique. Easy to enjoy as your next bargain red!

Old world Pinot Noir for a great price? I know, it is hard to believe! We had the Torti Pavia this Sunday at our staff barbeque, and I loved the way it went with the chorizo and the chicken sausage that we were enjoying for appetizers. It is a super refreshing style, with high toned red fruit, light body, but yet a surprising bit of sap in the middle that really appealed to me. This is a must try for anyone who likes lighter style Oregon Pinot Noir- they can do it in Italy too!
    Top Value!

This Pinot Nero, (Pinot Noir) is a lovely wine. Sweet perfumed cherries, flowers and spices all come together in this harmonious wine. Torti’s Pinot captures an attractive middle ground between the lighter and terrior driven styles of Pinot being made in Alto Adige. If you enjoy European-influenced Pinot with acidity, vibrancy and balance, this will blow you away! Melt some strong cheese, dip some bread and veggies in there, and enjoy with a glass (or a bottle) Great wine for all your late summer Bar-B-Ques.

While some Pinot Noirs are light, floral, subtle, others richer, flashier and more fruit forward, this Torti is neither, with a simple, nearly candied red fruit quality that makes it just about right for drinking on its own or with small bites prior to a meal. Light, fruit forward, easy going Pinot for the summertime.

A friendly, fruit driven Pinot at a great price. Northern Italy might not be at the top of many people's lists for Pinot Noir but this bottling certainly shows promise and for a very modest price point. Juicy, easy fruit, cherry, sweet baking spice, soft round texture. It's a quaffer for sure!
