K&L Notes

Domaine de la Fruitiere is making terrific Muscadet from some of the best crus in the region. This fun single plot all comes from sandy, gneiss soils that provide the accent of minerality that is so classic in this region. It spends about five months on the lees, rounding out the crisp citrus and saline palate.

Few wines of any type are as easy to drink, and so readily hit the spot, as good Muscadet. Whether as an aperitive or a perfect foil to a lighter meal, Muscadet is absolutely the ticket. This one is all bright, juicy citrus fruit, with a pleasingly round texture. Given that it's the season for braises and pan sauces, this white is also a classic "some for the pot, some for the chef" type of wine.

I had the pleasure of tasting this over the course of a couple of days. Day one - it was a classic rendition with a creamy lees driven palate of Meyer lemon rind, salty mineral notes and a supple palate. Day two, the wine crackles even more with vibrant acidity. There is so much nerve that this wine could lay down for a few years even. It summons memories of aged Chablis. Whenever you drink it though it makes a perfect aperitif but is suitable for a broad range of pairings the least of which should be a plate of shellfish. Outstanding!

A few years ago I noticed that several very highly regarded winemakers were placing internet orders for some of our top Muscadets. I made a few phone calls to see what their interest level was. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that these top wine pros simply loved the wines. Also, they all remarked that they cellar their Muscadets for years. Since then I’ve been a card carrying enthusiast of these fantastically delicious whites that still fly under the radar of most collectors. The pedigree of this wine belies its price tag. Though often considered (dismissed as?) light and refreshing, you can really sense the structure and complexity of this wine. This is a seriousness wine whose citrus and mineral character can be enjoyed now or over the next many years.

Muscadet always seems to be one of those varietals that flies under the radar and when I get the chance to taste one, I always remember just how delicious they actually are. Though there is definitely fresh, bright acidity and a zippiness to this wine, I was blown away by the texture and richness this bottling had to offer. There was weight and interest to this wine that hits multiple notes. The sur lee again aids in giving it the length and density it needs, while the natural flavors of the grape bring liveliness and minerality. A tasty, easy to like alternative that's great at cocktail hour or dinner.
