What a gem! Dark with berry and plummy fruit with hints of coffee and a long finish, this Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is surprisingly sophisticated. Though this 2013 shows enough richness and oaky vanilla to please full-bodied Cab fans, there is a lean elegance here that feels fresh and subtly earthy. And single vineyard from a classic producer for less than twenty bucks? Chateau Ste. Michelle "Cold Creek Vineyard" is a must-try.

Even with the size and scale of a producer like Chateau Ste. Michelle, they continue to produce outstanding wines that dazzle and delight the palate. The "Cold Creek" is one of the their prestige sites that produces that rich warm currant and blackberry fruit that are the hallmarks of Washington State Cabernet. A nice touch of vanilla and spices from a little barrel aging rounds out the profile and the wine finishes with a sweet and supple tone that has an immediate appeal. The quality is amazing really, and at this price, cases really are a must!

Starting with the obvious: a single vineyard Cabernet for a killer price! Lush with ripe plums and black fruits, this deliciously built Cabernet fires on all cylinders. The darkness of the juice is balanced by the bright aromas on the nose and its integral structure keeps all of the flavor elements in balance while letting you know it is (already at 5 years of age) good to drink now or save for a few years down the road.

A big, old vine driven Cab at a modest $20 price, the Cold Creek Vineyard shows layers of rich dark fruit and savory, scruffy sage brush flavors. While the nose show bright top notes of blue fruit and baking spice from the oak, flavors are definitely dark, chewy, and a faithful representation of Washington's Columbia Valley. I think I can see both long time and newer Cab drinkers getting really into this wine.

The nose of this wine has lots of currant and plum while showing hints of vanilla, yet you can tell there’s a depth there that comes from 40 year old vineyards. On the palate this is a sleek wine, supple, smooth muscles, it gives an immediate sense of length while not lacking any mid palate depth. The currant, vanilla character comes through but the wine begins to show a bit of earth and leather for complexity as well. A well balanced finish that has depth and length, at the price point there’s not much in this wine’s class.

This particluar CSM Cabernet comes from the Cold Creek Vineyard, a 40+ year old vineyard containing own rooted Cabernet Sauvignon & Franc, Merlot Chardonnay and Riesling. It pours an deep, inky purple, showing droves of ripe plum and blackberry fruits, tobacoo and cedar. Gorgeous Cabernet at a price that is becoming harder to find.

If this wine were from a top producer in Napa it would easily hold its own at $100. The level of concentration, power, structure, rich fruit and fine but plentiful tannin drinks so far beyond this wines price point it's shocking. Honestly if you run this up against top notch Cabernet from around the world I don't think you'll find a better pound for pound bottling out there. Sourced from a single block of vines planted back in 1972 (one of the oldest, original plantings on Cab in WA) this wine shows its historic pedigree through and through. Packed with blackcurrant, cassis, graphite, shaved cedar, charred oak, cigar box and dried herbs. A full bodied wine with surges of ripe, black fruit, a plush mouth coating texture and lovely fine yet impressive tannins. Explosive and expressive right now but certainly has the stuffing to go another 10-15 years. An absolutely ridiculous value given our deeply discounted pricing...we went all in on this wine after being simply blown away by its quality and price point.

The term "Classic Napa Cab" refers to wines like Dunn Howell Mountain, Mayacamas Vineyards and even Groth Cabernet. If the term “Classic Washington Cab” existed then I would put the Chateau Ste. Michelle "Cold Creek Vineyard" Cabernet in that group. We tasted the 2013 the other day and it was a reminder that while in general Washington wines can be quite rich and somewhat toasty, the Cold Creek shows wonderful precision and complexity. Planted in 1972, these vines are really producing some excellent fruit that is creating one of the best cabernet values around!
