Tasting Notes

When first tasting the wines of Domaine de la Jaufrette, the name López de Heredia sprang to mind. That famous Rioja producer is known for its late-release and complex reds that are subtle, old school and long lived. Jaufrette can be seen as the Rhône equivalent. Jaufrette is run by Frédéric Chastan, the third generation winemaker to oversee this project. The winery sits just outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation but has holdings in Vacqueyras, Gigondas and Côtes-du-Rhône. All the grapes are hand harvested and hand sorted, and the reds are fermented in concrete tanks. These are meaty, powerful reds that benefit from cellaring, but the beauty here is the fact that Jaufrette does a lot of the aging for you. Where most producers are releasing their 2014s and 2015s, we encouraged them to release their ’09s and ’10s.

One of my favorites producers from the Rhône, always making balanced wines. The Vacqueyras it's for me the top choice due to its complexity. Dark berries, cocoa, some roasted notes and exotic spices. Very elegant too. Quite a pairing with something like a Sunday Roast or a Coq-au-Vin.

Far and away one of my favorite Vacqueyras offerings in the store right now, the 2010 Jaufrette is a stand out wine. It certainly doesn't hurt that the vintage was fabulous across the board for France, but the attention to detail here is not to be overlooked. This is a very mineral and terroir-driven Vacqueyras. The nose is filled with roasted herbs and light calfskin leather, showing all the rustic qualities expected from a region so heavily affected by the famous Mistral (the strong Mediterranean winds that blow through the Rhone valley). The finish is long, with bramble, pepper, and light touches of ripe raspberry. Wonderful now, but given the longevity of the vintage and the amount this wine opened up over 24 hours, I would be very interested to revisit a few years down the line.

I had to chuckle when reading our product description for Jaufrette's wines, comparing them to the unapologetically traditional Riojas of Lopez de Heredia. There used to be a time where I had to compare those wines to similarly old school Italian and French producers to attract interest. These days, however, the old school and its emphasis on transparency, quality, and time tested techniques (and terroir) is back, and back with a vengeance. This Vacqueyras steps up the intensity, structure and black fruit when compared with the Cotes du Rhone. It's two years older, but tastes more than two years younger, due to the quality of the vintage and terroir. Intense black fruit and a pleasing salt licorice quality combine with structured tannins and a savory complexity that are beginning to show so much interest now, but will reward patient cellaring as well. A true original from the southern Rhone valley.

The Vacqueyras is probably my favorite of the three wines to drink right now. It has a nose of deep roasted cherry with fresh tilled earth and roasted cocoa nibs. There is a lot to like here with a supple texture and generous palate. It is still super old school winemaking. This is persistent on the palate and the wine just keeps giving. I spent a few days with a bottle and even at the end, the wine just kept giving more. My highest recommendation!

The 2010 vintage in the Rhone was spectacular. The wines are well structured, ripe, and vibrant. This Vacqueyras is a perfect example of why the vintage was so heralded. Just coming into its prime drinking window, this wine is darker and richer than Jaufrette's Cotes du Rhone and shows considerably more grip and texture. The sweet berry fruit plays perfectly with the garrigue and woodsy herbaceous notes. Don't hesitate to drink this now, but if you "forget" a few in your cellar, your future self won't be upset.
