Tasting Notes

Winemaker Anthony Girard grew up in his family's Sancerre winery, but spent a number of years learning about production all over the world before returning home to continue working with Sauvignon Blanc. While continuing to help with the namesake Girard label, Anthony wanted to create his own project on the side and eventually purchased a small plot of pristine real estate near the town of Récy with primo Sancerre limestone soils. After acquiring the vines he was given a large key as a symbolic gesture of new ownership, or a "clef du récit," which became the name of the estate. While the heavy limestone content helps the fruit to retain bright acidity, a portion of the vineyard is planted in flintier grounds, which adds minerality to the finish. Anthony's wines have been renowned for their freshness and zip and are in true Sancerre fashion.

My first taste of the Clef du Recit Sancerre was the 2016 vintage. It was my first exposure to sancerre blanc wines ever and it certainly set the bar high. The story goes, Anthony Girard grew up in his family’s Sancerre winery but decided to travel throughout the world to learn about wine production. When he returned home he decided to create his own project, purchasing a plot near the town of Recy where the limestone is rich in the soil. This type of soil is ideal because it gives the sauvignon blanc grapes an opportunity to retain its acidity particular to sancerre wines. What you get is a super balanced –in minerality, acidity and freshness- and refined sancerre that you’ll enjoy alone or with food. Personally I’ve had it with roasted chicken and goat or camembert cheeses. My go-to white sancerre!

2017 for Sancerre is really starting to show nicely, and the new vintage of Domaine La Clef Du Recit is beyond exceptional. With a fine balance of minerality and acidity, it's never overbearingly flinty, or acidic. It hits the right notes sip after sip, and it reminds me of why I fell in love with Sancerre in the first place. Fantastic terroir, limestone soils, that's all I need.
