Seven types of European and American oak casks were used for maturation. Lively on the nose, with orange, malt, sherry, and sweet oak. Initially, a touch hot on the palate, with sherry and cloves, then toffee and vanilla, red apples, figs, and cocoa. The finish is medium to long, with spicy sherry. (GS, Fall 2018)
The next iteration of the popular collaborative Macallan Edition series is finally here. This time Macallan has made the bold move to partner with...themselves! Bringing their new Master Distiller Nick Savage into the blending room to experiment with the fruits of the labor of distillers past. Nick selected malts from seven different cask types to produce an inticing and utterly unique expression of Macallan that is unmistakably The Macallan. Allowing the bold flavor of 1st fill European oak with a subtle counterpoint of 1st and refill American Oak is the plan here. 1st fill European Butts and Puncheons from Tevasa, 1st fill European oak butts from Jose Y Miguel Martin, 1st fill European oak butts from Diego Martin Rosado, and 1st fill American oak Vasyma Hogshead round out the 1st fill sherry component. These are tempered with a smattering of refill European and American butts and hoggies. The result is a blend of 42% Butts, 40% Hoggies, and 18% Puncheons. Much richer and more classically Macallan compared to the last release and hopefully relatively available for the time being.
