K&L Notes

Alvaro Palacios has roots that run deep into the soil of Rioja. He was born into one the region's most prestigious winemaking families, the force behind Palacios Remondo, yet his interests have always been grander. Rather than slide simply into a position at the family winery, Alvaro decided to go out and do his own thing for a while. During the '80s he worked in Bordeaux with Jean-Pierre Moueix, then decided to purchase his own winery in Priorat where he worked avidly to help put that region on the map. During that time, Alvaro advocated for the lesser known wine regions of Spain, eventually coming back to the family winery in Rioja. Once home, he set to work using his experiences elsewhere to get the business back on track, while at the same time rethinking exactly what Rioja is about. Today he's considered one of the region's forward-thinking leaders. There's a reason Alvaro Palacios was named Decanter magazine's "man of the year" for 2015. He's completely reimagined what it takes to make top quality Rioja, with the goal of maximizing terroir, cutting back on oak, and showing respect for the land. As a result, the wines from Palacios Remondo have become brighter, livelier, and more expressive since his return, but the best is still yet to come.

I was somewhat surprised by the aromatics of this wine only to be informed that it was comprised primarily of Garnacha versus the more traditional Tempranillo. That would explain my tasting notes which indicated that it reminded me somewhat of a better quality Cotes-du-Rhone. This is a really nice spin on a less traditionally styled Rioja. I enjoy it’s homage to fresh strawberries, herbs, and wood spice. The wine is silky smooth on the palate with well integrated acidity and mild tannins. I could definitely spend an evening with this bottle and some grilled lamb chops.

This is an absolute stand-out of a wine that I was super impressed by. The Chateauneuf du Pape-like terroir of the region results in a lighter bodies wine with great fruit, a fine tannin structure and a bright, fresh take on Garnacha. I think the price point is killer on this one and will have no problem making this my go-to recommendation for customers after fun, clean, super tasty wines for Summer into Fall. Pretty much a prefect pairing for anything.

This delicious Garnacha based Rioja is mainly about the fruit: pure, abundant red fruit, ripe yet well balanced with acidity and elegant tannins. It is not surprising that this Rioja is as tasty as it is, since it is brought to us by one of Spain's viticultural, winemaking and branding geniuses in Alvaro Palacios, and comes from fruit grown on a famous vineyard - a Grenache dominated vineyard in higher elevation, nearly pure stone vineyards that resembles Chateaunneuf du Pape perhaps more than Rioja.
