    These three single-village champagnes from Franck Bonville are such fabulous examples of how expressive terroir can be. The "Mesnil" is a very impressive and unique cuvee-- unsurprising given that Mesnil-sur-Oger is inarguably one of the greatest chardonnay growing regions in all of champagne. The nose on this one is more restrained, with a very clean freshness, like the crisp smell of a snowy alpine morning. Then the fruit explodes onto the palate, expanding out to every corner-- powerful and direct. This shares the same lightly saline qualities as the "Avize" but here it comes across a bit more spicy, creating an exhilarating and long-lasting finish.

    I call these the Trifecta of Champagne. Bonville has captured and bottled the Grand Cru village terroir of Le Mesnil, Oger et Avize. Whether you enjoy them one at a time or side by side, they are not to be missed. Le Mesnil is the elegant, chalky and citrus edged herbs. Then you move up to Oger where the citrus flavors have hints of savory yeast.

    Franck Bonville is one of my favorite direct imports and a go to when I need a solid Champagne that wont break the bank. His new single site series focuses on producing Champagne from the best plots in each village. He produces using all Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes and vinifies in all stainless to maintain verve. The "Pur Mesnil" has a long, rich finish with vibrant minerality. On the nose is sweet fennel and orange, white flowers and spice with a limestone, chalky mineral note. Delicious!

    Spoiler alert! This isn't arriving until late October of this year. I had a sample bottle today of this special, first-time release (with two other village designated releases) and it is not to be missed once it arrives. A low dosage of 4g/l does not necessarily make for any teeth chattering acidity! A honeysuckle and white stone fruit nose that is very pretty. Hints of cream, key lime and meringue. Super long finish! Very pretty texture and finesse. Super limited and perfect for those Champagne geeks of you out there. Also look for the "Pur Oger" and "Pur Avize", which are completely different.

    The 2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Mesnil" was my personal favorite of the Terroir Series from the House. Crafted from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay, this is everything I could want from a Champagne, especially at this price. The terroir of Mesnil is renowned for high belemnite (fossilized cuttlefish) content, which translates directly into this wine, which oozes saline minerality. The wine is quite dry, with a broad, creamy palate, and the finish lasts for minutes.
