Wow, there is a LOT of fruit going on here! The nose erupts with apple, pear, nectarine, and white raspberries. More nosing reveals scents of raw dough and soft lemon. The palate is very zippy at first, but quickly becomes gentle again and the fruit medley from the nose returns quite friendly and docile, finishing with flavors of fresh apple skins.

The highly anticipated results of Olivier Bonville’s 2012 passion project have finally arrived and they are fantastic. Each showcases the unique terroir of three different villages nestled on the eastern-facing Cotes de Blancs. “Avize,” (also Olivier’s hometown) showcases powerful, open-knit pear and apple fruit flavors with accenting floral and spice notes, minerals and a bright, stellar finish.

Franck Bonville released three 2012 Grand Cru "Pur"series Blanc de Blancs based on where the vineyards are located in the Grand Cru village terroir of Le Mesnil. We were lucky to taste all three side by side and had the opportunity to distinguish how each are different based on the location. In the case of the Avize, the stone fruit aromas and bracing acidity really do balance each other out along with the texture on the finish. The more I read my notes, the more I realize all three should be tasted side by side and not to be missed!

I call these the Trifecta of Champagne. Bonville has captured and bottled the Grand Cru village terroir of Le Mesnil, Oger et Avize. Le Mesnil is the elegant, chalky and citrus edged herbs. Then you move up to Oger where the citrus flavors have hints of savory yeast. The Avize is rounder and is more fruit forward. Whether you enjoy them one at a time or side by side, they are not to be missed.

The Avize vineyards contain a little clay with their chalk but not as much as Oger and kind of take the best of both worlds between Oger and Mesnil with the searing acidity and supple fruit palate. Soft ripe fruit palate, bright acidity but not lightning acidity like in Mesnil but enough to clean your teeth! Yum Yum!

Somewhere in between Bonville's Pur Oger and Pur Mesnil this is really a "best of both worlds" wine. Not quite as bright and tart as the Mesnil, but not as round and robust as the Oger the Pur Avize is beautiful with distinct honeysuckle, beeswax, round orange and a light flinty quality Bonville has created something truly beautiful!

Bonville is the best at taking expectations and beating them with flair, and this bottle is no exception. Round, but not as rich in the palette as the Oger offering, while offering some of the bracing acidity of the Mesnil offerings, this balanced approach creates possibly the most universally likable of Bonville's offerings.

These three single-village champagnes from Franck Bonville are such fabulous examples of how expressive terroir can be. The "Avize" bottling is one of the most elegant champagnes I have ever tasted. The nose is pure floral aromatics-- inhaling deeply feels like awakening springtime. Six years aging on cork gives it a richness that belies the extra brut classification. Sweet brine, nectar, and flower petals on the front end, and a beautifully mineral-laden finish. You'll want to buy these three as a set, but I think the "Avize" might be my favorite in a close race of phenomenal wines for texture alone-- it is one of the most lusciously creamy champagnes I've had the pleasure of tasting.

Franck Bonville is one of my favorite direct imports and a go to when I need a solid Champagne that wont break the bank. His new single site series focuses on producing Champagne from the best plots in each village. He produces using all Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes and vinifies in all stainless to maintain verve. Out of the three selections, this has the most edge to it. It's a little wild and funky with aromas of wet hay, wild flowers, Parmesan and baguette. Like having a picnic in a field after a rain storm! The palate is steely and really pretty all at once with an almost floral note rounding out the freshness on the finish.

Although this will not be arriving until late October of this year, I am writing them up to let people know about them because this is part of an unforgettable trio that is new from our beloved Franck Bonville. Of the three selections (including "Pur Mesnil" and "Pur Oger"), this one is the leesiest! A nose of cream and fresh cut pears. It lingers on the palate with with tart orange and lemon/lime flavors. Quite linear, with a long, long finish, which seems to be the hallmark of this line. Superb!

One of three Blanc de Blancs from Franck Bonville in the house Terroir Series, the "Pur Avize" is classic in profile, with notes of slightly oxidized golden and red delicious apple and spicy walnut. The palate is clean, dry and balanced, with a zippy acidity and a sharp, linear focus. Saline minerality and concentrated spice notes trail in a long finish.
