K&L Notes

Domaine les Pins has been family run for five generations. They are a small, artisanal producer that oversees every stage of production from start to finish themselves. They have roughly 30 hectares of Cabernet Franc spread out through the Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil regions. They practice sustainable farming, and each and every vine gets singular attention throughout the year. Vines of an average age of 25 years are planted in sandy, clay, and gravel soils. After harvest, grapes are de-stemmed, sorted, and put into tank for spontaneous fermentation to begin. After being pressed off and letting malolactic fermentation happen, the wine is put into concrete tank for at least 10 months prior to bottling.

Ok! So I'm a freak for cab franc, but there's kind of a trend right now toward something cleaner, safer, easier. I totally appreciate a fresh easy drinking Loire red that shows good fruit and great acid, but occasionally I crave the serious old school Cab Franc I cut my teeth on. Les Pins offers both styles, but when we tasted the Clos Les Pins I fell totally in love. Definitely some of that funky earthy green quality I love, but not to the point of being overwhelming. Just the right amount of barnyard to give the deep dark fruit a twist. Wonderful texture and with silky supple tannins that keeps this one from feeling astringent at all. This is a whole lot of wine for $15 and even if you're a total funky hater you might end up loving this and for anyone who even dabbles in the dirt will appreciate the complexity and quality immediately. Stock up!

I am a Cabernet Franc enthusiast to say the least. The wines possess many of the classic Cabernet family of flavors but with a more medium bodied texture. Plus they have their own savory something that makes them so engaging and that's why they are one of my favorite daily drinkers. We've been working with Domaine les Pins for a few years and the wines are always inviting. The entry-level Les Rochettes is full of perfume and has elegant tannins. The Le Clos, from an older vine parcel, is something even more special though. Deep and earthy, it has more body than the Rochettes and offers up a nose of black cherry, olive tapenade and oolong tea. It has a bit of classic funk too that plants it in the old world. And for well south of $20 my weeknights just got a whole lot better.

Domaine Les Pins is a family owned estate, making wine for over five generations. As an independent grower/producer, they are hands on with every aspect of their production and work traditionally at every stage. The "Le Clos les Pins" is a single parcel of Cabernet Franc, the only varietal they work with. This is a little more savory and rustic in it's profile. The nose has an almost umami aspect to it with rich black olive notes, a touch of menthol and a bit of saddle leather that marries nicely with the bright, punchy red fruit. The palate has a bit of tannin, but it's all very soft and velvety with a nice punch of acid, making this a fantastic wine for the dinner table. This would be great with everything from roast chicken to roast beef. Another delicious Cab Franc to add into my weeknight rotation!
