K&L Notes

Bishop’s Peak wines are handcrafted by Talley Vineyards to capture the varietal and regional diversity of San Luis Obispo County. Bishop’s Peak, an iconic local landmark, was chosen as the symbol for the brand, showcasing wines that are produced in small lots from vineyard sites in the Arroyo Grande Valley, Edna Valley, and Paso Robles Viticultural Areas as well as the Nipomo area south of Arroyo Grande. Some of these sites are owned by the Talley family while others are owned by growers who share the family’s commitment to quality. The wines balance production and quality to deliver exceptional value, while maintaining the same attention to detail that is the hallmark of Talley Vineyards.

The folks at Talley have been making some of our favorite Chardonnay in the area for quite a while. While their Bishop's Peak line sees less oak, it undoubtedly delivers the same quality and value of their main brand. This wine brims with tropical fruit - guava, passion fruit and melon - and finishes brisk and clean. The subtle oak adds texture and a longer finish, but sits more in the background, letting the fruit and acid shine. At this price, it may become your go-to everyday Chardonnay.

Talley's wine are among my favorites in all of California and their Bishop's Peak range of wines give people everyday drinkability without having to sacrifice quality. As the label states - hand-picked, hand-crafted and aged in French oak. This is seriously great Chardonnay at bargain basement pricing. Sourcing from their own vineyards and neighbors, these wines are from the same stable as the 96 point Rosemary's Chard, made by the same winemaker Eric Johnson...and the pedigree is clear to see or rather taste! Bright, flinty aromas of orchard fruits, pie crust and white blossom. The palate is focused and mineral intensive with salinity and verve. A juicy, generous texture fills in without masking any of the subtle complexities. Beautifully judged. Crowd pleasing but also refined and detailed. Drinks WAY above it's modest price point.
    Top Value!

Wonderfully fresh and fruity, the Bishop’s Peak Chardonnay uses no new oak barrels in the fermentation process. Sourced from coastal San Luis Obispo County, the fruit gives off flavors of crisp melon, citrus and pear. Great buy for a refreshing California Chardonnay!

I've always found the Bishop's Peak wines to offer a surplus of flavor for the cost. This Chardonnay is bright and fresh, with an uplifting amount of acidity and truly a lot of intricacy. San Luis Obispo is offering a lot of value and is a great alternative from the ever-increasing prices of NorCal wines.

The nose of this wine is filled with a delicate stone fruit with hints of sweet vanilla that gracefully frame the wine. On the palate it shows mid weight but has a supple textural richness accented by a nice acidic balance. The finish is standard but perhaps very good for $15 California Chardonnay, all in all an excellent value that shows character beyond a dose of toasty oak.
