A blockbuster offering is the 2006 Panoplie (68% Mourvedre, 27% Grenache, and 5% Syrah). Aged in large wood foudres and the smaller demi-muids, this beauty reveals notes of soy, roasted herbs, gamy animal, and copious quantities of black and blue fruits. With superb texture, full-bodied richness, and a long finish, it should drink nicely for 10-15 years. (RP)
The most evolved of Panoplie lineup, the 2006 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel Panoplie, a blend of 68% Mourvèdre, 27% Grenache, and 5% Syrah, is starting to show secondary notes with spicy red fruits supported by toasted bread, exotic spice, flowers, and roasted meat. Soft and round on the palate, with sweet fruit, solid texture, and a classy, very long finish, this is drinking well, and I would consume bottles over the next 8 to 10 years.
Bright ruby color. Deeper dark fruits on the nose than the "basic" Esprit. Also more brooding and slow-to-unfold, eventually giving up black cherry, tobacco, licorice and candied plum. A big, rich mouthful of wine, displaying a full range of black and blue fruits and a velvety texture. The finish is utterly seamless, and endless. Today I prefer the elegance of the previous wine but this is built for the long haul. (JR)
