K&L Notes

Gai'a Estate was founded in 1994 by Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos during the new influx of creative thinking and revitalized winemaking began to make inroads in Greek wine cultivation. With two estates now, one in Nemea and this property on Santorini, they are making some of the most beautiful and captivating wines in the country. The Thalassitis is a pure expression of Assyrtiko, from vines almost 80 years old. Santorini is a desert island and the yields are extremely low. That helps build the intensity and character of the wine with its flavors of stone fruit, wild honey and salt air. This makes it the perfect complement to the fish and shellfish from the surrounding sea.

I realized that the Greek wine renaissance began years ago when I started to see real wines of character and pedigree being offered by quality importers. The next generation of Greek winemakers have really raised the bar on what has been happening there and these wines have been hitting our shores for about a decade. The most intriguing and impressive white grape of Greece is Santorinis Assyrtiko. To me it tastes like a hypothetical cross between a premier cru Chablis and a top flight Albarino. It possesses great texture, almost chalky. With zesty acidity, a touch a citrus, and that mouth-watering savory character that keeps you coming back for another sip every time. This is not the touristy libation of old. This is serious wine from one of the most gorgeous places on earth.

The wines of Santorini have exploded in quality over the last few years and one of the standouts is definitely the Thalassitis from Gai’a Estate. The aromas of fresh cut melon, sea salt air and charred lemon peel make for some of the most engaging and inviting wines for food pairing. This is classic with some grilled meaty fish over coals with a shot of lemon and some fresh olive oil. But the grape Assyrtiko is kind of a red wine drinker’s white. It works equally well with stewed pork and lamb dishes. Can you ask for much more?

The rich, nutty nose is the first thing to hit you in this wine, but the underlying palate is quite different with super fresh, bright acidity and citrus character. The high minerality and salinity of this wine undoubtedly are due to the island climate and a slight umami character peeks through in the end. This wine is different from most I've ever had, in a great way. If you are looking for a food-friendly white that diverges from the regular Sancerre or Chardonnay, please try this one.

Call me crazy, but I see lots of value in a $32 white wine (#corkdork), made from indigenous grape varieties that grow on own rooted, decades old vines planted to volcanic soils (#santorini), carefully trained in basket shapes to protect against winds (#islandlife), and then are carefully fermented, aged, bottled and shipped thanks to containerized shipping and distribution (#modernlife), presented to us as an option to buy to enjoy with our favorite grilled and sauteed fish and shellfish (#firstworldproblems). This is a fantastic, stone fruit and salt laden white wine that is perfectly suited for the table, whether living on or off island. Highly recommended.
