K&L Notes

La Ferme du Mont is the passion project of Stephane Vedeau who cultivates some 50 hectares of grapes in various spots throughout the southern Rhone. All vines are cultivated without the use of pesticides and chemicals. Each site is meant to be the truest reflection of the terroir and the grapes they produce. For the Le Ponnant, the mix is primarily Grenache with a small amount of Syrah and Mourvedre blended into the cuvee. The bulk of the wine is aged in large concrete tanks with about 1/3 in 225L and 500L barrels.

Grew up with the sure knowledge that there were nine planets orbiting our sun, until a decade or so ago Pluto, the loneliest little voice in that rockstar group fell out, and was reduced to backup singer status, an ignominious round pebble 4.67 billion miles from Earth (facts matter). Turns out now that Pluto, with a complex atmosphere and underground ocean, deserved planetary status after all, leaving me to come down to earth, return to my calling, and ponder the beauty of those countless heat-absorbing pebbles and stones that blanket the vineyards of the Southern Rhone, ripening the fruit to perfection. Speaking of perfection, we just tasted through several transcendent 2016 reds from famed organic producer Stephane Vedeau of La Ferme du Mont— and the Ponnant, with lovely aromas of garrigue, dried flowers, cherry and rooibos, revealed a galaxy of brambly black and red fruits on the palate, and a deep, satisfying finish that reminds us all why we love the rapturous wines of the Rhone Valley. Pour this, pair this, with roast chicken or herb-marinated lamb burgers for an irresistible match.

It’s a pretty good day when your first order of business is to taste the entire lineup of '16's from La Ferme du Mont. Following on heals of the bold and ripe 2015 vintage enthusiasts will rejoice from the freshness of the ‘16's. While I truly enjoyed each cuvee, the "Le Ponnant" was a standout. It had all the bright, crunchy red fruit of the "Premier Cote" but possessed slightly more complexity along with a creamy red berry compote character. This property has quickly become one of my favorites in the southern Rhone.

Capturing the essence of a Cotes du Rhone is no easy task but this Villages level wine from winemaker Stephane Vedeau delivers everything you could hope to find... and more. From the older vine parcels in this plot, the nose on Le Ponnant summons aromas of potpourri, garrigue and Moroccan spices. The palate exudes flavors of red currants, Rainier cherries, and cardamon. This is pure, classic and unadulterated Rhone. Another star value from this vintage!

We tasted the 2016 Ferme du Mont "Ponnant" alongside a few other villages cru offerings from the same vintage. They all shone brightly, affirming the many accolades that have been given in advance of 2016 arrivals, but "Le Ponnant" stood out in it's richness and depth. While the others shared the light strawberry-pepper qualities typical of blends heavy in Grenache, this wine has fleshy, dark cherry flavors, (more fruit than spice), and a long, powerful finish.
