El Viejo is a special blend of Tobala and Espadin from Union Mezcal. The Union between the producers, farmers, and importers is what this brand is all about. The brand helps support a replanting project for wild agaves through a careful nursery program and replanting the young plants back into their natural wild habitat. The success rate for these agaves is many times higher than for cultivation attempts. It's these type of brands and projects that will help ensure we have Mezcal to enjoy for many years to come. Of the thousands of seeds they plant, only a handful will germinate. But, they're still replanting them in the wild at a much higher rate than they're cultivating. This is a blend of 14-year-old wild Tobala and cultivated Espadin. The nose has hints of savory smoke and spice, but the overwhelming tropical fruit from the Tobala is on full display here. One of the most affordable examples of Tobala available on the market today and done in a sustainable way, which makes it taste that much sweeter.
