K&L Notes

Tapiz is one of the most renowned and awarded Argentine wineries, made even more famous by the addition of winemaker Jean Claude Berrouet in 2012, recently retired from Pétrus after 44 vintages at the revered Bordeaux château. To celebrate his addition to the team, Tapiz created a new "Alta Collection" line of wines using fruit that comes solely from Tapiz's sustainably farmed San Pablo vineyard in the Uco Valley. San Pablo is one of the highest altitude vineyards in Mendoza (4,600 feet above sea level). This extreme altitude provides for warm days which impart concentration to the grapes, and cold nights which give natural acidity.

This is good honest Cabernet. It is medium-full bodied with classic dark berry Cassis fruit with just a hint of spice and herbal tones. There are enough tannins to give it heft and size and enough acid to bring everything into focus. It drinks as easily as it flashier NorCal cousins but at a fraction of the price.

Tapiz consistently accomplishes what it sets out to do - build structured and generous Argentine wines with classic varietal character and wonderfully accessible price points. The new Collection Cabernet offers generous flavors of cassis, tobacco leaf and cardamom spices. It's generous fruit is easily counterbalanced with its supple tannic structure. Perfect with some marinated skirt steak and grilled vegetables. A great summer Cabernet!

While the critic's notes of ripe and chocolaty might make you think this wine is fat...it's not. The nose is complex, for me there's more herbal, spice and leather than sweet fruit. On the palate I first thought this is one of those ultra-polished winemaker wines but then the acidity popped up with a bit of tannin and I was quite surprised by the verve and lift in this wine. The flavors, while showing some complex berry character, mostly replayed the aromatics, lots of earth, spice, leather and carried into the finish. The finish was surprisingly long, I have to admit I didn't expect a lot out of this wine but it had exceptional balance and a intriguing flavors

In terms of winemaking pedigree, you cannot do much better than to have someone who was responsible for making a $2,500 bottling of wine perfect, year in year out, for 44 years. That is exactly what Jean Claude Berrouet did at Petrus, and what he now does as well at Tapiz. The popularity of Tapiz Cabernet cannot be overstated: last year we sold many hundred of bottles of the 2014, and even in dollar terms it represented our best selling wine of 2017. We feel strongly about the 2015 vintage as well. It has all of the structure of 2014, perhaps with even more depth of flavor and savory Cab complexity. It is very hard to find a better bang for your buck Cabernet Sauvignon out there; this wine is just tough to beat!

So I'm pretty skeptical of inexpensive South American Cabernet. Yes we've had some serious deals in the category previously, but a lot of what's being produced just doesn't offer in the category, while maybe boasting some good scores and a low price, just doesn't taste that much like Cab to me. The new Tapiz is an outlier in that respect. It gives you everything you want in a cabernet. A great bouquet of deep dark fruit pointed by undertones of gravel and herbal spice. The structure on the palate is there with a soft supple tannin keeping the fruit in check and great length. If this said Napa valley on it most people would quickly shell out $40+ for the same wine. At $15 a bottle pizza is on me tonight!

The Tapiz Cabernet Sauvignon Alta Collection is a wine of pedigree and quality. The fruit is sourced from their own estate vineyards. The wine is made by Jean Claude Berrouet formerly of Petrus! You’d be hard pressed to ask for more out of a Cabernet for $15! This wine could cost $30 and I would still recommend it. There’s plenty of red berry fruit, medium weight, and a long finish framed by just enough tannins to give the wine structure.

If you enjoyed the 2014 Tapiz Cabernet, be prepared to be impressed. I found the 2015 to be far superior, with all of the dusty, dark cassis fruit of an old school Napa Cabernet, but this time with even better freshness. While the 2014 reminded me of old fashioned Caymus, this excellent 2015 reminds me more of a Heitz. Don't miss this deal!

I was definitely impressed after tasting the last vintage of Tapiz Cab and this one only added to my awe of this label. It is incredibly complex, which is an impressively considerate feat given its under-$15 price tag. Great structure, dark fruit, and serious length make this one I will continue to recommend with abandon. Great find Joe!
