Tasting Notes

This all Meunier, single vineyard, barrel fermented wonder was the best Champagne I tasted on my spring trip. And yes- that includes all of the $1000 + canons that we tasted! Don't wait. It will disapeer. -Gary Westby, K&L

This wine is exotic, and intriguing. Like other purely meunier-based champagnes, it's flavor is concentrated, with a rich intensity, but the "Revelation" retains a refreshing quality. A pleasant, lemon-peel-like bitterness shows through, along with candied apricot, and a stony minerality indicative of the colder climate of the vintage.

This is amongst the best Blanc de Noirs in the store. It’s made entirely from a very old plot of massale-selected meunier vines, and sees time in french oak barrels. It has an amazing bouquet of baking spice, pear, honey suckle and herbs. On the palate, the fruit profile is electrifying and complex, and leads to a long, yeasty bright finish. It has the brightness and concentration of fruit with the precision and cleanliness only the best champagnes display.

After tasting 100's of bottles, this was my top Champagne of my 2018 spring trip to the region. It comes from one special plot in the village of Monthelon, half of which was planted in 1950, and the other in 1902. These ancient, massal selected vines are in a super cold microclimate, giving the wine an incredible tension between old vine concentration, Meunier exoticism and nearly Salon like freshness. The tiny, super high quality 2012 vintage has served up a rarity in Champagne, something that has the power of Krug and the lift of Comtes de Champagne. With under 2000 bottles made this won't last long!

Alexandre Le Brun is a very interesting Champagne profile. He harvests on 6 acres and 75% of his fruit is sold to Bollinger and what is leftover is made for his own personal label out of his mother’s basement! Don’t be quick to skip over this one though because this may be one of the most intensely aromatic champagnes I’ve ever come across and definitely one of the most interesting. Cuvee Revelation is made of 100% Meunier from a single vineyard planted in 1950 with some older vines dating back to 1902 making these being some of the first planted after the Phylloxera devastation. This wine gives a nice and savory palate of hibiscus, fresh toast, honey and dried apricot and gorgeous acidity.

Not only is it rare in Champagne to find a bottling of 100% Pinot Meunier, but to also find it in a declared vintage year when every grape counts makes a unicorn wine. Alexander Le Brun only runs on passion. While he sells 75% of his seven acres to Bollinger (a testament to the quality of his grapes), the rest he keeps to make a few wines of his own. This is one of the most fascinating Champagnes on the shelf right now, showcasing beautiful richness and balance. All old vine and small barrel fermentation, there is nothing typical about this wine, which makes it all the more special.

What I love about this story is that these bottles are produced from a plot located just behind the home of Alexandre Le Brun’s mother. The Pinot Meunier vines planted here range from 1950 to 1902, and very telling on how special this bottle of champagne is! On the nose you’ll get a very balanced lees-y and red fruit note while on the palate both acid and bright fruit intermingle with a hint of smokyness throughout. This is a special bottle, one I would encourage anyone to purchase as a gift or open for a particular occasion without breaking the bank!

One of my favorite (and there are many) things about a Champagne made from entirely Menieur is the finesse and character the grape will bring to the wine. It will bring a depth of red fruits into the racey acidity Champagne is known for. The Cuvee Revelation has all those wonderful characteristics plus the depth and breadth of being aged in small barrels. I found notes of bosque pears and soft baking spices. It is balanced, layered and beautiful as ever.

Made from 100% old vine Pinot Meunier planted between 1902-1950, this wine has much to reveal. Wafts of creamy, leesy almond commingle with darker mushroom aromas, leading to a surprise: a bright, fresh, almost tropical palate with hints of hibiscus! High tone red fruit and chalky minerality abound, and a gorgeous, long finish ties everything together harmoniously.

In Champagne, as in anywhere else, there are old vine cuvees, and then there are truly ancient old vine cuvees. Here we are dealing with the latter, as the youngest vines comprising this blend were planted back in the 1950´s, and the oldest ones were planted many, many years prior to that. While I have previously sung the praises of top quality Pinot Meunier based Champagnes, this particular bottling from Alexandre Le Brun is truly singular: intense, long, mineral, wonderfully balanced, serious but with an easy to drink quality that I love in my favorite Meunier based Champagnes. Classy and classic, cool and relevant all at the same time, Revelation earns my highest recommendation.
