Bright violet. Smoke-accented cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied licorice, musky rhubarb and cracked pepper. Chewy and broad on entry and then tighter in the midpalate, offering concentrated dark berry preserve and spicecake flavors and a sweet touch of candied violet. Closes on a recurring floral note, showing impressive persistence and suave, even tannins. (JR)
Violets, rose petals, fresh blueberries, crushed stones, oyster shell and dried spices. Full-bodied with a tangy core of berry fruit, firm and structured tannins and a spicy finish. Drink in 2020.
Combines structure with polish and substance, offering expressive raspberry, garrigue and smoked spice flavors that build richness toward refined tannins. (TF)
The 2016 Esprit de Tablas contains more Syrah than has been the norm in recent years, a reflection of its unusually fine quality in this vintage. A blend of 46% Mourvèdre, 31% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 5% Counoise, the wine reveals youthful notes of strawberries, licorice and aromatic bark. On the palate, it's textural, medium to full-bodied and savory, with fine-grained tannins, good balance and nice depth and dimension. It will be bottled in July and seems to be a very promising rendition of Esprit de Tablas. (WK)
A collaboration founded in 1989 between the Perrins of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands that had me thinking this Mourvedre-dominant blend was Chateauneuf -- it has a natural swell of voluminous fruit, but a savoury demeanour. Gentle, unforced plum, damson and blackberry aromas, rounded, juicy and ample on the palate, generous cool fruits and puppy fat. Good sense of balance and purity. Long and satisfying. Biodynamic. Drinking Window 2020 - 2026 (MW)
Just bottled last week, the 2016 Esprit de Tablas is an age-worthy blend of 46% Mourvèdre, 31% Syrah, 18% Grenache, and the rest Counoise that was brought up all in foudre. It offers perfumed notes of raspberries, cherries, leafy herbs, and hints of violets. With medium to full body, a seamless texture, and beautiful purity of fruit, it has a forward, fresh, accessible style yet will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for a decade after that.
Exotic cherry aromas mix with mace and other rum-barrel spices on the nose of this blend of 46% Mourvèdre, 31% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 5% Counoise. There’s a burst of red cherry and tart strawberry on the palate, which then settles into a smooth suave texture. (MK)
