Tasting Notes

The excellent Tamdhu distillery is one we've worked with previously, but the spirit itself doesn't make it to the open market too often. The distillery, near the village of Knockando, has wide onion-shaped stills. Couple that with classic wooden washbacks and you've got one of the most reliable malts on the market. Part of why we don't see more of this excellent spirit on the open market is that the blenders do value the quality and consistency so highly. Since Tamdhu's purchase by Ian Macleod (owners of the Chiefton's Brand) in 2011, their revamped distillery releases are winning awards left and right. When we see it at a price that makes sense it's extremely rare that we pass it up. This awesome whisky does more to support the idea that Tamdhu delivers. Filled into a first fill hogshead (likely a mixture of ex-bourbon and sherry) in March of 1998, the powerful malt-driven style marries perfectly with the active oak here. Needs a drop of water to open up but when it does expect a real powerhouse. Another incredible value from the spectacular Old Malt Cask brand. It's absolutely silly to think that this renowned malt is 20 years old and only $90. For anyone who enjoys the classic Speyside style driven by oak and malt, this is a must buy.

A lovely dessert Scotch right here. I pick up notes of salted toffee, chocolate chip cookies, vanilla, and some floral elements too. The palate has a great blend of fruits and spices with highlights of cherry, peach, apple, and orange. The finish ties the fruity and confectionery flavors together with a little leather.

This enticing dram hooked me the moment the first stream from the sample bottle crashed into the bottom of my glass and released aromas of caramelized apricots (seared), cedar plank, white flowered honey, and finishing with a tangy meyer lemon zest. After taking a small sip at cask strength, I added a splash of water and this 20 year old became even more approachable. Sweet and soft with notes of brown sugar and orange blossom honey, I struggled to imagine how a bottle like this would last more than an evening with friends. It shouldn’t. Drink and enjoy in moderation, with lots of good friends as this is definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Tamdhu is definitely coming up in the world these days. What was once an unknown entity is quickly becoming well regarded across malt drinking circles. This awesome cask give another push to the unsung hero of Knockando. The nose explodes with deep baked Mirabelle, raw honey and gorgeous fresh vanilla. The palate continues the hyper appealing profile adding some darker flavors, chocolate covered orange slices and marzipan. Deep sweet malt completes the package for one of the most seamless and approachable casks we'll sell all year. This one doesn't need water, but it loves a bit of air. An absolutely stupendous value considering where the no age statement distillery bottlings are priced.

This single cask of Tamdhu is easy to drink, but is more than that, offering not only delicious flavors but also complexity. The nose is sweet and malty with subtle vanilla undertones. In the mouth it is malty, juicy and layered with a hint of vanilla coming through and a nice balance between dry and sweet. There is a long finish.

Salty like a fino sherry on the nose. Rich like an olorosso on the palate. The sherry staves of this first fill hogshead come through crystal clear. The rich and oily Tamdhu malt coats the palate and plays perfectly with all the added richness from the cask. Dark dried fruits fill your mouth and dance with golden malt. It's a powerful whiskey, a rich and complex cask, and a ludicrously good deal. The Tamdhu name doesn't have the flash or cache of some other big name distilleries, but it does provide exceptionally good malt at affordable prices. This cask absolutely crushes it.
