Tasting Notes

Foursquare Rum Distillery, St Philip, Barbados really should need no introduction. Originally set up by Reginald Leon Seale the great-great grandfather of the current Master Blender and Distiller Richard Seale, the distillery has become the byword for classic Caribbean rum. Richard Seale is an absolute iconoclast who has turned the rum world on its head. In an industry dominated by huge drinks corporations that has long sold a story above the quality of its product, Seale has fought for transparency in production and labeling of rum. Derided by some as an idealistic purist, he is championed by many (including K&L) as a leader in an industry that has transformed how we think about rum and what rum consumers want. We have tracked down an exceptional and rare cask of Foursquare (not an easy feat) and as always for Foursquare, it has been bottled without color, caramel, or sugar added. The natural sweetness and complexity of the column and pot distillates blended together provides all the richness you need. What's absolutely totally unique about this exceptional cask is just that, single cask Foursquare is about as rare as hen's teeth. That's because Richard doesn't really believe in it (or at least believe it can be viable to market rum that way). But we most certainly do. This rare single cask proves more than anything that the special Bajan distillery on the southern end of this wonderful coral isle deserves every word of praise it has yet to receive and many many more.

Wow. Nosing this rum I couldn’t stop thinking that this is a scotch drinker’s rum. Lightly smokey with notes of bacon, baking spices, honey, dried sage, oak and brown sugar, this rum reminded me of a very light Islay or something from the Highlands. Sipping this turned into a totally unique experience for me. It kept some of those scotch like qualities while introducing complexities more associated with Rum. Sweet, spicy, and complex with notes of wintergreen, brown sugar, and quince; this kept me coming back to try and see the complete puzzle.

Every bottling I've ever had of Foursquare has incredible intensity and this is no exception. It is the kind of bottle that you can smell when someone opens it across the room. A combination of pot and column distillate, it's got just enough of the sweet funk to satisfy the biggest rum geeks, but is so balanced and easy drinking anyone can enjoy it on it's own. It's jammed with cocoa nibs, vanilla, banana, roasted hazelnuts and a garden of tropical flowers. There is just a touch of the earthy rubber tree and a whiff of campfire to balance out the big sweetness of the bourbon barrel. With some dilution the flavors stretch out and the intensity mellows into a perfect casual sipper.

I was straight up giddy when our friends at Hunter Laing pulled out this wild little cask of Foursquare. Not because it's easily the hottest rum distillery in the world right now, but mostly because I've never ever tasted a single barrel of this stuff. We knew it wouldn't be cheap. Mr. Seale does sell to blenders, but it seems from what I can tell that most everything sold is tankered out of there. This special cask, while of course the classic pot/column blend that Foursquare is known for, was indeed blended at birth as is typical. But even after having every rum geek I know pestering him to release single barrels, Richard has yet to relent. So we are forced to search elsewhere for our fix and we're goddamned glad we did cause this rum is sublime. What's most shocking about it is just how open and approachable it is at full strength. We'd expect some hard edge pot to dominate but the years married in cask have made the two distillates intertwined in the most beguiling way. Pungent, yet restrained. Powerful, yet supple. Big bold and sweet enough to give even the most novice rum drinker a chance, but unquestionably an expert rum of the highest order. We know this cask is expensive and some might point to the distillery bottlings (also VERY hard to get) and find that those offer more "value." I argue that nothing is more valuable than experience and this is one experience that you won't want to miss.
