Tasting Notes

There's no question that Springbank is my favorite distillery. There are so many reason's why I love Springbank, but the most important one is the most obvious - it tastes amazing. Now qualify that with the fact that the Springbank distillery is literally the only distillery making authentic single malt the way they would have 100 years ago. Modern Scotch distillers want you to believe that the changes they've made over the last 50 years are designed to make their distilleries better, which is 100% true if you own the distillery. But goals of efficiency and consistency come at the expense of character and complexity. Springbank malts 100% of it's own barley. They utilize nature unaided fermentation. They continue to incorporate a direct fire element on their still (despite the extreme risk inherent in the process). Why does Springbank make whisky this way? Because it's better. It might not be as consistent, seasonal and even daily differences in the product coming off the stills at Springbank are the norm. But no whisky will ever exhibit as much soulfulness as the old stills in Campbeltown. Once you get the Springbank bug it's difficult to go back. And because they barely produce any whisky there, it's hard to get. It's also very expensive to make, perhaps 2 or 3 times more expensive to distill than any other. And so sometimes we get lucky and get offered a little cask. And this one was particularly tiny. Only 78 bottles for the entire country. A living legend in our midst.

Wow, this is really something special here. There's a lot of strong peaty yumminess in this big boozy brasher. The powerful smoke is matched by syrupy cherries, caramel, peaches, and ocean brine. The peat gets stronger on the palate with bold spice (black pepper, chilies, cinnamon, clove) that all fades into a long finish of dying embers and ash. All lovers of Springbank and Campbeltown: rejoice!

Lightly peaty on the nose to start, I was surprised to get a blueberry and pineapple fruity notes, with even a hint of cooked agave and woodiness at the end. The palate told a different story as the fruity notes staved themselves off until the end. The main players- peat, light smoke, and a green bitterness with a hint of sweet almost like wheatgrass played across the palate with caramel covered blueberries making a cameo appearance at the end. The finish was full of oak tannins and as they began to fade, exhaling through the mouth provided a fruit punch note that took the dram full circle.

What a gem. A volatile and enticing nose akin to petrochemicals and pheromones greets you warmly and lets you know you're in for a wild ride. Every sip is like engineered joy. Banana, spiced meat, and dried flowers swirl amid smoke you barely notice until you're breathing fire. The finish is impossibly long, conjuring earth, herbs and a touch of red fruit. With water, the whisky takes on a whole new life - vibrant and youthful with a freshness and salinity that remind me of certain Speyside drams. The fruit here is exquisite, and the smoke only serves to enhance the plethora of complex flavors. If you have the opportunity, you owe it to yourself to pick up a bottle.

It's more or less impossible to not love Springbank. It is truly a distillery that you can wax poetic about and not be lying to yourself. It is as old school as it gets, always has been, and I hope always will be. If you already know this, I don't have to tell you. If you don't already know this, you must venture into some of the best whiskey the world has to offer. If you just want to take a peek without breaking the bank, grab a bottle of the Springbank 10. If you already know or you want to dive into the deep end, get a bottle of this cask. It's pure Springbank magic. It's chewy and full bodied, but light on it's feet. I'd go so far as to say it's fresh as a daisy. There is that classic Springbank peat, never overwhelming, just enough to give it a bottomless depth and an added connection to the earth. The malt is in its full regalia. The proof is perfect. In short, this is the deal of the year. If you know what you like, and you like Campbeltown's best distillery, this is perfection.
