This is truly one of my favorite little wines from out Spanish portfolio. Full bodied, dark and rich, as is only right in a Monastrell from Jumilla, the wine still is very well balanced, with rounded tannin, fresh acidity and good poise. A great crossover wine for the California palate, but also just a very good example of the best of Jumilla.

I'm a big fan of all forms Mourvedre/Monastrell. From the burly outsized wines of France's Bandol region to the generous more supple versions from Spain's Jumilla. Roasted black plums with savory notes of crushed herbs and a lilt of lavender on the finish, this is pure and expressive. Sweet tannins and a lingering finish, this is a bold and expressive rendition that will enjoy near term consumption. I'm having it with some marinated and grilled skirt steak!

Once upon a time…it’s wines like this that made me fall in love with wines from Spain in the first place. I started drinking their wines as far back as the ’98 vintage; the single vineyard Las Gravas. I considered this a great value way back when and as far as I can remember it was about the same price! I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of visiting the property twice and have fond memories of eating the greatest almonds I’ve ever tasted as well as rabbit paella served to us at the winery. We washed the paella down with bottles of their glorious Monastrell. I love the combination of dark berries, wood spice, a touch of earth, and the suave tannins. This is another colossal effort from the finest property in all of Jumilla.

There are a lot of interesting elements to this wine and hard to believe there can be so much complexity for $13! There is a fantastic balance of acid and fruit here and it wouldn't be Monastrell without a kick of structure in the back. The combination of concrete and barrel fermentation help round the sharp edges of this wine without adding any oak taste that would drown out the dark fruit. Fantastic wine!
    Top Value!

There is no producer in Spain that has a track record with Mourvedre (Monastrell) that even approaches that of Casa Castillo. Imagine if Domaine Tempier made sub $15 wine from just outside of the Bandol region; that is the quality and pedigree here. While there is plenty of peppery fruit on the nose, the palate shows great balance and leaves an overall dry impression, with a combination of bright, dark skinned and just a hint of red fruits as well. Terrific value.
