The 2016 Derrière Chez Edouard from Olivier Lamy is even a step up from the very stylish les Frionnes and has the best depth and nascent complexity of any wine up to this point in the lineup. The first class nose jumps from the glass in a blend of pear, tangerine, sweet grapefruit, chalky minerality, citrus zest and a nice touch of fresh almond in the upper register. On the palate the wine is crisp, full and rock solid at the core, with fine soil signature, a racy personality and impressive cut and grip on the very long finish. This is superb. 2021-2040+.
An exceptionally fresh, cool and restrained nose features notes of plum, violets and spice. There is fine richness and intensity to the solidly powerful and punchy flavors that possess the classic Edouard minerality on the linear, delineated and youthfully austere finale. In contrast to the prior two wines this will need at least a few years of cellaring first. Recommended.
Pale lemon-yellow color. Slightly reduced, leesy scents of lemon, spices and musky flowers. Dense, ripe and juicy, conveying terrific cut and minerality to its flavors of lemon, orange oil and spices. Doesn't have quite the depth of a great vintage but finishes tactile and chewy, with strong minerality. (ST)
The regular bottling of Derrière Chez Edouard is very attractive, offering up notes of apple, tart pear, white flowers and wet stones, subtly framed by a touch of new oak. It's a deep, full-bodied wine with a lovely line of racy acidity, a solid core, and a lovely vein of almost saline minerality.Drinking Window 2020 - 2030. (WK)
The 2016 Saint Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard was more closed and broody compared to the Clos des Meix in barrel. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry, with traces of sour lemon and peach skin, moderate depth with a brisk and lively finish that compensates for the laconic aromatics. I would grant this a couple of years in bottle to allow time for the nose to develop.(NM)
