Thibaut Chamfort has taken the helm at this wonderful multi-generational estate property situated in the village of Sablet. Making wines from a variety of terroirs including - Rasteau, Plan de Dieu, Vacqueyras and of course Sablet, he uses organic practices and minimal intervention in his winemaking practices. Concrete tanks are used for fermentation and mix of tank and large foudre for elevage. Thibaut is making pure and decisive wines from the variety of his holdings. The Rasteau comes from the higher plots in Rasteau over mix of marls and large pebbles (similar to the pebbles of Chateauneuf). The blend is 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah.

    This luscious medley of raspberry, dark cherry, earth and spice is a like warm, comforting hug for the palate. It is full bodied and dynamic with fruit well-represented in both the aroma and flavor, plus I smell a dash of herbs and orange rind that makes this wine even more enchanting. The acidity and tannins say a cheery hello and the finish is the last to leave the party. Get ready for a thrilling explosion of the senses!

    This unexpectedly good Rhone red combines an outstanding vintage with substantial Grenache and Syrah fruit which results in a wine priced far lower than one would guess. It's certainly close to Chateauneuf in density and complexity and represents one of the best values in our Rhone department. Best with lamb, beef and firm cheeses.

    The rocky soils of Rasteau are reminiscent of Chateauneuf. A little north Chateauneuf du Pape actually, loads of galets (the giant rolled pebbles) compose these vineyards radiating their warmth back to the vines while providing the necessary drainage and difficult soils that great wines need to struggle through to produce their divine nectar. Verquiere has been one of our big success stories these last few years, from the delightful Cotes du Rhone, to their harmonious Vacqueyras and their eponymous Sablet (their home village), each wine speaks of its terroir. The Rasteau has always been a standout for me though. It is a CDP cloaked in value. The ripe boysenberry and cherry notes leap from the glass and provide sultry fruit flavors and exotic spice tones. Winemaker Thibault Chamfort often thinks this is his best wine too, sometimes making a deluxe cuvee in prominent vintages. No need for any spin-off cuvees here though. The 2016 is a great vintage and that weight and freshness translate through with that Verquiere sense of place and all for $15! With this Rasteau you can now have Chateauneuf quality as your everyday wine!

    This has dark plummy fruit, nice earthy undertones and nice spice from the syrah, which also adds plenty of acidity to give the wine lift and drinkability. A considerable step up from the Verquiere Cotes du Rhone in terms of structure and elegance for not so much of a price hike. Killer under $15 red. ​

    This bottling encompasses pretty much every element I would want and look for in a Rasteau. Fruity on the nose with bright natural acid, savory herbal notes, and nice length, this is a great contrast to the lighter wines of Gigondas and the rustic ones of Vaqueyras. If you have yet to explore the single village bottlings of Rhone, this is a great way in and I think offers a lot for the price.

    Verquiere has been a go to source for honest, super tasty sub $10 Cotes du Rhone for us for several years. That said, their village bottlings such as this Rasteau are absolutely worth a look as well. Clean cut, darker fruits are featured on this 2016, with notes of ground black pepper on the nose, some black licorice on the palate, and all in a medium weight wine that is crowd and food friendly as well. I strongly recommend that this go into your regular rotation if you are a fan of Rhone reds.
