K&L Notes

The cultivation of this vineyard in this region likely goes back to Roman times. But it was at the Abbey of Bourgueil, founded at the end of the first millennium, that the vineyard really developed. The Benedictine monks knew how to make their guests appreciate the finesse and bouquet of their wines. In 1089, Abbot Baudry, each year, he invited his friends to come and drink the wine he had in abundance. He was quoted, "If I have a good wine in reserve, I'll give it to you". In 1152, the "Breton" grape variety (Cabernet Franc) made appearance thanks to the political union of Anjou and Aquitaine.

This is delicious and approachable with plenty of raspberry fruit, savory herb and flecks of green tobacco right through to the fine finish. There is a touch of chew to the dark and fruity middle and a faint dusting of limestone and a whisper of saline at the very end.

Domaine Les Pins is an estate that always churns out fantastic wine with a great price tag. Family run and focused on quality, this old vines Bourgueil is brimming with concentrated fruit. The nose is perfumed and seductive, and while this can be cellared for some time, it's also drinking beautifully now. There's a structure to this that is at once slightly firm but also completely approachable. The tannins have a bit of chew, but the wine itself is soft with ripe fruit easing the firmness of the structure. This a great bottle at an "everyday drinking" price point that feels way more elevated than a $16.99 price point.

This reminds me why I love Cab Franc--what an ethereal and complex grape! And what a lovely wine. It has savory notes of curry, incense, and tobacco all underpinned by bright berry fruit and silky tannins. A medium body and a long finish that'll have you contemplating what you just tasted for minutes after. All this for $16.99. A steal! Put a big cassoulet in your crock pot and then pop this baby open alongside it for a perfect dinner.

You can tell from the deeply pitched black cherry nose that this comes from a warmer Loire Valley vintage. That fact combined with the older vine material make this surprisingly approachable. That said, there is also the refeshing complexity on the nose and palate, the whiff of a forest following a soaking rain, hints of grape pips on the palate in addition to the berry fruit. All of these provide refreshment and nuance, which are arguably a few of the best aspects of Cabernet Franc. Grab some for now and a few more to age several years in the cellar.

The region of Bourgueil is almost an underdog story waiting to be written. Neighboring appellations like Chinon and Saumur make exceptional wines but the unsung heroes of Bourgueil should never be counted out. And one of my favorite producers in this tricky to pronounce area (Bore-guy will get you in the right direction) is Domaine les Pins. The winery is a fifth generation estate that has always over performed its price points and in a great vintage like 2015, they went for the stars. The 2015 vintage is incredible for both red and white wines throughout the Loire but reds at all levels rise to a greater and more expressive nature. The wines are downright ripe and fleshy but maintain bountiful acidity and harmonious character. The 2015 Vieilles Vignes is the best youthful version of this wine I have tasted from this winery and it hums with opulent black cherry fruit, a bouquet garni of gorgeous savory herbs and finishes long and supple with polished sweet tannins. This is Cabernet Franc that can cross boundaries from the purist to the uninitiated, capturing the essence of the vintage. This underdog story begins for well south of $20 a bottle and you would be hard pressed to find a red wine of this character and quality from any region that writes a story this compelling.
