On the border of Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece vigneron Nerantzi Mitropoulos has made it his life's mission to explore and express the indigenous varieties of his home country. Working organically and with all indigenous yeasts, each wine is a pure expression of its variety and the region. Assyrtiko, well-established as a grape by the island of Santorini, has the potential to expand outside the region. Nerantzi has planted it on primarily calcareous sandy-loam which has given it this beautiful texture and weight. The vineyards at nearly 1000 feet, are an ideal alternative to the volcanic pomice and ash that make up Santorini. We think you'll agree, this wine goes beyond potential and shows that Assyrtiko is Greece's most intriguing white.

    I love Assyrtiko--it's a deep and complex white grape with lipsmacking acidity. This rendition does not disappoint, and it's particularly interesting because it's from the mainland near Macedonia, not the island of Santorini as is generally the case. It's a shiny golden color in the glass, with vivid notes of tart green apples and wet stones on a beeswaxy, luscious palate, finishing off with racy salinity. It's organically grown at high altitude, and it's just delicious. Try it with scallops!

    Cool stuff! Round stone fruits show a bit more phenolic intensity than the norm for this grape variety, which is often described as flinty like a Loire valley SB, but with a unique minerality and saltiness all its own. There is a richness to the golden color of this wine that either suggests the extra year in bottle, some difference in winemaking, or a combination thereof, when compared to some of the other Assyrtiko based Greek wines we have enjoyed telling you about. Try this well cured and/or salty cheeses, roasted sardines, garlic and thyme, fried smelt...anything savory, salty and or of the ocean should pair wonderfully with this terrific Greek white.

    Assyrtiko is taking the world by storm! The most famous examples come from the island of Santorini but there are many exciting new releases coming from the mainland as well, like this rich and lush example from Serres region. The Nerantzi reminds me of grilled peaches with a drizzle of honey. Less saline than their island counterparts as the salt air doesn't whip through this area but the flavors are pure and plentiful. This is perfect cool weather white demanding a place on the table for full flavored pork and chicken dishes and is equally suitable for most holiday meals!

    This wine encompasses everything you imagine in a Greek white and more. It is definitely bright, lean, and mineral-driven, but it also has an incredible amount of texture and weight that helps it to linger. It is fresh and crisp, but the unexpected richness gives substance and complexity. This is a fantastic find.

    I generally think of Assyrtiko as a lively and fresh light bodied varietal. While this wine is indeed zippy, it has a wonderful weight and texture to it. It's denser than many Assyrtiko bottlings. The bright citrus flavors are supported by minerality and a cast of deeper bass tones. This added texture makes this a perfect pairing wine for lots of food. Chicken, seafood, and roasted veggies all come to mind.

    This is definitely different yet delicious expression of Assyrtiko grape if you compare it to Santorini versions. This one has deeper and richer texture with more exotic flavor profile, it's full of orange and pomelo fruit on the nose and on the palate, with powerful backbone of minerality. As it breathes it opens up and blossoms with floral and spice notes. Being so complex, it certainly reminds me of white wines from Burgundy. This would work nicely with Dungeness crab or large scallops.
