Tasting Notes

The Mortlach distillery is something of an enigma. Founded in 1823, their famous 2.81 times distillation technique (touted as the reason for the meaty robust flavor) was developed at the turn of the century. The vast majority (circa 95%+) of production is destined for the Johnnie Walker Blenders, where it balances the sweet highland malts and smoky Islays perfectly. One of the few Diageo single malts we've yet to actually visit, the distillery has become an icon for those in the know. For others it's a mouthful - Mort LATCH? No no, Mort LOCK! But there's no denying the spirit coming out of there is one of the most intriguing, beguiling, enthralling, idiosyncratic, and undeniably delicious example of the Scottish Speyside available. The robust spirit is renowned for its age-worthiness, but because of its strong propensity to be blended we almost always see it in refill casks. Diageo probably doesn't need too much of this stuff sitting in expensive 1st Fill bourbon casks since they'll just be dumping in a bunch of cheap grain and caramel, but that doesn't mean they won't do it. As with the sherry butts, 1st fill bourbon and Mortlach seem to get along magnificently. The beastly savory quality of the malt isn't so much tamed by the active American oak, but instead it's seemed to be made even larger. Deeper, richer, and much more textured than the 10 Year Milroy we sold last year, we're paying a premium here as compared to that whisky and there's no question it's worth it.

This scotch is nuts! And by that I mean it's amazing, and tastes like nuts. I get multiple kinds here-- toasted pine nuts and olive oil on the nose, with nutmeg and pecan pie on the palate, rounded out by some citrus patch aromas (the skin and the blossoms). There is a somewhat youthful spiciness lingering here, but the additions brought to the party by a first fill bourbon cask are on full display here, rounding out the heat and bringing everything to a very harmonious and smooth close.

Mortlach is definitely one of the more unusual and less known Speyside distilleries, but its pedigree is irrefutable. This 10 year single barrel shows all the characteristics of top tier Speyside Scotch. Savory spice and pleasant salinity frame a lively core of fruit and ginger. With a splash of water, this whisky shows its true colors. Impressively light despite intense flavors of green and tropical fruit, it finishes with impeccable freshness and a touch of citrus zest that begs you to revisit and pour yourself another glass.

It’s much lighter and more elegant than a lot of Mortlach bottles I’ve had in the past, and the nose reflects a more contemporary Speyside style compared to the older style with its meatier/earthier spirit I’m familiar with from this distillery. I get a medley of fresh fruits (grape, lime, mandarin orange) and light flowers (lily, lilac), matched with cereal aromas. The palate is more robust with caramel, cinnamon, and earth. Water brings out a more oily mouthfeel and spicier finish. This is definitely one to check out for anyone who's a fan of exploring Speyside whiskeys or any Mortlach cult collector.

An excellent single cask selection. This single malt will be very easy to drink. The nose is a beautiful mixture of floral and honey notes. In the mouth in is pure and clean with nice fruit and malt flavors and a candied spice finish. A splash of water gives it a creamy note.
