K&L Notes

Winery Notes: "The heritage of Mount Eden Cabernet Sauvignon dates back to the 1890s, when the famed viticulturist Emmett Rixford of Woodside, California, obtained selected cuttings from Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux, France. Rixford planted his famous La Questa Vineyard with these selections, in the same proportions as found at Margaux. In the late 1940s Martin Ray planted his first Cabernet vineyard with cuttings from the La Questa Vineyard. The present-day Estate Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted in the early 1980s using cuttings taken from these vines. Yields are low, typically one to two tons per acre. Soils are very thin (1-12 inches), with a dominant base of Franciscan shale. The climate is cool, especially for Cabernet, and influenced by the vineyard’s altitude and its proximity to San Francisco bay and the Pacific Ocean. The vines are trellised in a modern fashion, which allows for a more uniform ripening. The vineyard also contains small blocks of Merlot and Cabernet Franc."

Mount Eden’s Bordeaux 2014 blend consists of all-estate fruit grown 2000 ft above the Santa Clara Valley. The vines can be traced back to the 1890s when the cuttings were brought over from Château Margaux in Bordeaux. The nose opens with cedar, cigar box, smoked meats, and eucalyptus oil. A second pass reveals lavender, raspberries, and mocha all seamlessly wrapped together. The 2014 is perfectly balanced with lively acidity, supple tannins and the perfect amount of oak. This is some serious wine, to say the least, worthy of being put away for decades.

Looking to add to your cellar? Does your Cabernet Sauvignon section look a bit sparse? The 2014 Mount Eden Estate Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon would be a great choice. Forget about the overpriced usual suspects from Napa Valley; this vibrant mountain-grown Cabernet is the real deal. On par with Ridge's Monte Bello, the Mount Eden opens with an enticing floral and bramble fruit nose wrapped in an understated vanilla blanket. The pallet strikes a fine balance between plush cassis and silky, well-integrated tannins. This wine will continue to delight for decades to come.

If you're into old-school, classically styled, structured California Cab...then look no further. To be honest if wines of that ilk are your thing, then chances are you're already familiar with Mount Eden as they have been putting out benchmark wines in this style for many decades. The 2014 is just starting to warm up its vocal chords and will probably reach a crescendo 10-15 years or so from now and sustain that note for another 5-10 years. Yes they truly age that well. I recently attended a tasting at the request of longtime winemaker and custodian of Mount Eden, Jeffrey Patterson. At the event we tasted 2005 vintage Cabernet-based wines from around the world. Wines included: Heitz Martha's, Ch. Montrose, Ridge Monte Bello, Almaviva and more. Despite being significantly less expensive that all the other wines in the tasting, I thought the Mount Eden Cab was the wine of the lineup. The wines have impeccable pedigree and refinement and deserve a place in everyone's cellar.
