Maybe I better preface this review by stating that I, like millions of other mortals, just watched the third episode of Game of Thrones eighth season, The Battle of Winterfell, and burrowing from that relentlessly dismal place of darkness to the light of another day with the radiant sun still shining and blessed birdsong on the wire made me feel like a weary mole coming up for air. So here we are, vicariously visiting another realm, this time of Alsace, which, with its grand natural beauty and panoramic vistas, could easily pass for one of the 'Seven Kingdoms'. Growing grapes on sixty degree slopes on a veneer of unyielding volcanic rock is a different kind of battle, resulting in Grand Cru wines of superb concentration, poise and expression that can evolve for years. Dominated by primary fruit flavors of white grapefruit, peach and quince, enhanced by ginger notes, a thread of stony minerality and luscious, lingering acidity, this magnificent Riesling would pair well with grilled lobster tails or baked scampi. Arya up for it?

Rangen is by far my favorite vineyard in Alsace. From the first time I tried Riesling from that site I fell in love with it. Not only it's one of the steepest vineyards (60 degree slope) but it's also the only one in Alsace grown on volcanic soil. And something about that volcanic soil that makes Riesling from where so unique and complex. On the nose it has orchard fruit, dusty soil notes and hints on honeycomb. Palate is luxurious: broad, deep, texture is layered and well rounded. Dry, spicy, the acidity is present but tamed, yellow plums and touch of tangerine join in on the palate. I think this is extremely versatile and food friendly wine and its sheer beauty will please a wide range of wine drinkers.

From one of the most highly-regarded vineyards in all of Alsace comes the 2017 Julien Schaal Riesling Rangen de Thann Grand Cru Volcanique. Minerals, wet stone and the slightest hint of peach blossoms appear on the nose while the palate surges ahead with an energetic array of almond skin, orchard fruits, petrol and mandarin flavors. An impossibly good wine from an amazing vineyard site you owe it to yourself to grab a few of these before they're all gone.
Top Value! Drink from 2018 to 2028
