Matured for 12 months in used American oak. Like all the Penfolds '16 red wines, flawless colour and clarity heralds a bouquet that leaps out of the glass with a heady perfume of roses, bramble, spice and licorice. The palate duly delivers an effortless wave of dark chocolate, cherry and licorice. (JH)
Where Bin 128 is unashamedly cooler climate, Bin 28 is its warm climate counterpart, a five-region classic Penfolds blend of Barossa, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide and Wrattonbully. It's seasoned for 12 months in American oak, which brings that telltale touch of toastiness, vanilla and cola spice to this youthful, primary red. Its blackberry fruit expression is tinged with fresher red berry notes, and its concentration and silky richness are infused with a plum-fruit quality. The toasty edging of American oak and vigorous tannins complement a backbone of firm acidity, bringing a nip of freshness to the finish. A wine for haunch of venison and heartwarming beef casseroles. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030 (AR)
A warm, early harvest has delivered a wine with more dried, baked blackberries and plums, reflecting the DNA of Penfolds style, and a wine that makes a more savory, spicy and earthy impression than the previous 2015 release. The palate is assuredly rich and round with blackberry and dark plum-pastry flavors, layered on silky, dense and rich, ripe tannins. Long and mellow. Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide, Wrattonbully fruit sourcing. Drink now or hold.
The full-bodied 2016 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is a blend of fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Upper Adelaide and Wrattonbully. It's a warm-climate, rich, plush Shiraz, with a velvety mouthfeel and lingering savory notes on the finish. (JC)
The 2016 Shiraz Kalimna Bin 28 is another wine that comes from multiple regions in South Australia. It’s a ripe, sexy beauty that gives up tons of blackberry and black cherry fruits intermixed with notions of spice box, licorice, and chocolate. It’s medium to full-bodied, has tons of fruit and texture, and is a pleasure bent beauty that stays balanced and incredibly drinkable. Enjoy it over the coming 7-8 years (it should keep even longer if you’re so inclined).
