Super smoky with enormous depth, but also incredibly precise and pristine with a salt, savory and mineral finish that doesn't want to stop. In spite of that unique personality and that there is a couple of decades of aging potential, it's so easy to enjoy right now. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.
An intriguing nose combines smoke, flint, crushed citrus leaves and aromatic bergamot zest. The palate picks up some of those same ethereal citrus notes and underlines them with ripe Amalfi lemon freshness and more juicy ripe citrus like mandarin and aromatic tangerine. This is concentrated, alive, and electric with all manner of citrus and a vivid force of life. What a joy to drink now— hard to resist in fact—but this being dry Riesling we know that this has even more pleasure in store. Drink now–2035. (AI)
The 2014 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain is pure, precise and mineral on the nose, with flinty and speculoos aromas. Full-bodied, round and elegant on the palate, this is a rich, intense and firmly structured yet also pure, vital and piquant Riesling. It is full of tension but also finesse and a really dry, stimulating taste (just three grams of residual sugar). The finish is long, tight and very complex, and reveals firm tannins due to 18 hours of whole-cluster pressing. Just 12.5% alcohol. (SR)
Pale yellow. Cool aromas of green apple, lychee, chlorophyll, powdered rocks and crystallized ginger, lifted by a whiff of orange peel. Dense and quite dry, displaying superb precision to the stone and spice flavors, which are complemented by a suggestion of chewy tropical fruits. Classic Riesling that finishes long and with superb cut and focus. Made from roughly 50-year-old vines. (ID)
A muscular riesling from the volcanic soils of Rangen, this is golden in color and in its super-concentrated flavors of peach. There’s salty warmth to the wine’s distinctive minerality, captured here in a youthfully powerful wine that feels graceful and elegant. It finishes with cool, clean purity of fruit. The relatively high elevation (1,150 to 1,475 feet above sea level) and proximity to the Vosges Mountains makes this a late-ripening site, while the steep, south-facing slope facilitates that slow ripening. It’s a pretty glorious 2014.
An aromatic, elegant version, featuring gingersnap and spice accents to the flavors of poached peach and pear fruit, orchard blossom, smoke and saline. Lithe and focused by firm acidity, with a lingering, racy finish. Drink now through 2024.
