K&L Notes

93 points, Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "The 2015 Barde-Haut has a fragrant bouquet with intense black cherry, cassis and oyster shell aromas that blossom in the glass (just as it did in barrel). The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with white pepper and spices. I appreciate the balance and focus here, the acidity cutting through nicely on the finish lending tension and sappiness. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle and you will have a very fine Saint-Émilion." A bit more flamboyant than many Barde-Haut offerings and showing the richness of the vintage but with plenty of tension and tell tail mineral on the finish. This shows off ripe raspberries, fig and dark plum fruit in the dense middle before the tannin and mineral buried underneath pull the finish along.

After reading the excellent critical reviews, I was excited to try the 2015 Barde-Haut for myself. Well, it one-hundred percent lives up to the hype. It is loaded with ripe blue and red fruits, but the notes of mint and eucalyptus raise this St-Emilion to another level entirely. For those who love a modern style of Bordeaux, this Barde-Haut delivers in spades. Give it a chance to open it up as the wine just keeps evolving with baking spice, tea, and slate flavors emerging. This 2015 is ready to drink now and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to develop for another 20-plus years. That this bold and dashing red can be had for under $50 makes it all the more appealing. Barde-Haut is at the top of their game and this glorious red makes the case that they are among the most exciting properties in the Right Bank today.

Usually one of the top high-end values in Bordeaux, Barde-Haut's 2015 take things to another level. Aromatically it is incredibly intriguing, nuanced, and dynamic. While the core seems very traditional St-Emilion, there is a wild blue fruit note that keeps showing through. The palate shows terrific focus and balance, certainly dialed back from the bigger, more flamboyant styles of, say, 2009 or 2010. But qualitatively it should be in the same conversation. A bright burst of acidity carries deep red fruits, hints of earth, minerality, and mouth-coating tannins. The 20% Cab Franc shows up through the finish in a very engaging way. This is a lot of wine for the price and should thrill Bordeaux fans of all types over the next 15-20 years.
