Tasting Notes

The tumultuous ownership history of Fettercairn has been in part responsible for the lack of brand recognition. While it has long been bottled as a single malt, it has never gained much notoriarty that way and the bulk of its stocks end up in blends, most recently for Whyte and Mackay. An interesting production set up, particularly from 1995 to 2009 when they used stainless steel condensers, has lent itself to a nutty and heavy style to the malt. Fortunately for K&L drinkers, this 14 year old whisky has taken that natural style and matured into a oily, rich, warm, and inviting malt. The perfect introduction to this facility and a screaming good value. The quality of this malt leaves no doubt as to why this distillery has been scooped up by buyer after buyer for the last two centuries.

We don't see a lot of Fettercairn around. . We've come across casks at Signatory and they prices have become untenable. But the potential to put solid under $60 medium aged malt drew us to this cask. We're glad we tasted it because it fits perfectly into our selection this year. It offers a ton of value for people wanting a spirit driven well matured malt for not a whole lot of money and exemplifies the “highland” style perfectly. The whole package is pretty well polished, with subtle floral and fruit aromas stacked on top of pointed crystal malt flavors. This drinks best for me with the second dollop of water, which allows a beautiful wild honey character out of its hidden bag of tricks, the added sweetness a welcome addition. Odd fruits, kiwi, loquats, lychee and dried yellow plums. The finish wafts in with a big herbal dryness. Not having tasted too many independent Fettercairns I'm hoping this is a good representation of this unusual little distillery because it's absolutely delicious! Hopefully more like this in the future, but don't get your hopes up, we almost never see this distillery. Don't forget that second little splash of water to open her up.

A single malt from a distillery that usually goes into blends, I haven’t had a lot of experience with Fettercairn but after this, I wish I had. Amontillado Sherry was the first and most distinguishable note for me but the briney aspect dissipated quickly and was then left with white sage and heavily buttered caramel. That brine stuck through the palate, but just barely as light cola, honey, and whipped cream overran it as it lingered. The finish was short and sweet, not one for long goodbyes.

We don't get to see a lot of this wonderful single malt so it is a treat to have some now. This is an elegant single malt with subtle floral and savory aromas. In the mouth it is light with nice sweet notes and floral undertones. Drinkable with out water, additional water opens this Fettercairn up and makes it more soft and easy.

Have a soft spot for unadorned, ex bourbon, workhorse single malt? Not at all candied, just a bit grainy and deliciously balanced, old timey stuff? Then I would suggest ye olde Fettercairn. I first encountered this whisky my first year working at K&L, and ever since then whenever we have scored a cask I have yet to be disappointed. Fettercairn is great scotch whisky. It's not showy, it's just impeccably made and always hits the spot.

There is only one disappointing thing about this independent cask of Fettercairn. It doesn't come adorned with the unicorn that is the official logo of the distillery and that's a shame. Everything else is pretty much perfect. It's sweet and malty, has a rich and full body and the sweet balance and grace off a refilled hogshead. There is some earthy intrigue, a lot of nutty goodness - like fresh cashews, lightly roasted almonds, and oily filberts and macadamias. Couple that with sweet vanilla and fluffy brioche buns and it's a glorious dram. A particularly honeyed finish comes out with more intensity with a little water to soften the otherwise quite accessible 56.9% proof.
