K&L Notes

The Paux-Rosset family are the current stewards of this historic property, raising the level of quality to new heights. With consulting winemaker Claude Gros helping to oversee the production and Bastien Paux-Rosset overseeing viticulture, they have pushed Negly forward as one of the top producers in the whole of Languedoc. Low yields, strict selection and quality terroir of sandstone and clay-limestone yield pristine grapes that deliver some of the most exciting wines to be found in the south of France. L'Ancely is based on Mourvèdre with small amounts of Syrah and Grenache rounding out the blend. The vines are on primarily sandy clay soils and after fermentation the wine is aged in demi-muid (larger barrels). A beautiful wine worthy of the cellar or in its youth served alongside large roasted cuts of meat.

When Chateau de la Negly joined our portfolio of direct producers a few years ago, it was one of the great additions to our roster of southern French wineries. The wines from top-to-bottom set new standards and benchmarks by which all others in the region are measured. L'Ancely was always a standout for me as it comes primarily from a single parcel just below the chateau right out near the sea. It is primarily composed of Mourvedre, which always likes a view of the water (who doesn't though?) and you could probably hit the beach from the vineyard with a good throw. L'Ancely is an opulent wine to be sure. It is brimming with flavors of creme de mure, sweet blueberry jam, bay leaf and graphite. The Mourvedre shows though on the palate with its slightly dustier tannins that fill the mouth. Not as heavily structured as say a Bandol from Provence (the other great Mourvedre region) but equally satisfying. A bottle recently opened continued to pour out flavors for hours but showed its peak performance at hour three when the fruit and structure came into total focus. This is execptional wine worthy of collecting (I have a few from previous vintages and they are wonderful!) but will surely satisfy with some heavy meaty braises and stews for a cool winter night.

This wine was quite a surprise for me. Reading the reviews I knew this wine was going to be a blockbuster. However I was surprised with how much finesse and balance this wine showed in the mouth. Despite its intense concentration and power, it is focused and seamless in its mid-palate with a firm, fruit-driven tannic backbone. This is a wine I would love to have in my cellar and enjoy in about 10 years!

The nose is full of a briar/brambly fruit, subtly spicy with hints of white pepper. This is not a big spicy Syrah based wine it is 80% Mouvedre that gives the wine a more approachable, less tannic (it still has tannin) than a similarly priced Cote Rotie. On the palate the wine is supple, round, shows depth, balance and breeding, the flavors are less fruity than the nose and show a more savory bent accenting earth and dead leaf. The proverbial iron fist in the velvet glove this wine has great potential while still being pleasant to drink now. You should throw a few into your cellar.
    Drink from 2019 to 2036
