K&L Notes

One of our most popular direct imports, the price-to-quality ratio we've found in these wines year after year is simply unbeatable. Our customers have come to rely on this family-run winery to provide great quality, drinkability and value. The 2014 was the first vintage of Chateauneuf du Pape produced by Montfaucon. A single hectare of mostly old vine grenache yields a deliciously balanced and refined CDP that shows the integrity of Rudi des Pins winemaking and honest representation of the region. A stellar bargain for sure. The Wine Advocate agrees: "Based in Lirac, which is just to the west of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Montfaucon reliably produces high-quality wines that almost always represent solid values." All the depth and complexity I've come to expect from Montfaucon, multiplied by ten. There is bounteous fruit in the nose, like a bowl of fresh-pressed dark forest fruits (huckleberry and blackberry). Signature black tea notes on the finish, with a light dusting of espresso that remind me of the Baron Louis Lirac with more nuance. Rudolph de Pins truly is a masterful winemaker-- I've had wines of his well past their "drinking window," and from purportedly "bad" vintages that have still blown me away. And this is him at the top of his game, in a vintage that will go down in history. The stars have aligned, so don't ignore them! Stock up.

This is the third vintage of this wine for our dear friend and Lirac master Rudi des Pins. All from a single vineyard old-vine parcel, it is a Grenache dominant field blend. Each year this wine has taken a few steps forward in the expression of the terroir as Rudi has gotten to know the vineyard and this is a benchmark wine now. The wine comes in waves with its black cherry, boysenberry, cocoa and savory spice notes but all with an underlying elegance and balance that is classic for this vintage. And also shows the deft and restrained hand of a top winemaker. We've made the wines of Montfaucon famous in our stores from the basic Cotes-du-Rhone to the Comtesse Madeleine Blanc and especially the powerful Baron Louis Lirac. This Chateauneuf is probably the one Rudi will most be remembered for, for many years to come.

I spent several days in the Rhone back in January of 2017. The big buzz at the time revolved around the mighty 2015s. However, most of the winemakers I spoke with whispered, “wait till you try the ’16s.” It was clear that the critics favored ’15 but the vignerons quietly preferred the ‘16s. The Montfaucon CdP illustrates the vintage differences perfectly. While the ’16s are clearly well-fruited and complex, they possess greater energy and freshness than their ’15 counterparts. At just below $40, this Grenache-dominant bottling provides you with textbook Chateauneuf style that can be enjoyed young but will be a show stopper with 7-10 years of age. It’s mouth watering and juicy with ample structure and a very long finish. This wine is easy to recommend.

I wonder who first uttered that a dog's bark sounded like 'bow-wow, bow-wow!, as 'woof-woof-woof' is far more accurate of canine expressiveness. As a human creature, when I taste something delicious, my response, whether uttered or not, is often simply "Wow!" Case in point, this most recent incarnation of Rudi des Pins Chateauneuf-du-Pape is another exuberant expression from a winemaker who pours heart, soul and passion into every bottle. Crafted from venerably gnarled Grenache vines with a lusty dollop of Mourvedre, this robust Rhone red harmonizes succulent black and red fruits, baking spices, wild herbs, and gustatory resonance with a savory, satisfying finish. At under $40, it delivers incredible value and finesse, effortlessly competing with wines twice the price.
