K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "The 2014 Site Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards was harvested September 20. It's 100% Syrah from BNV's Block 4, farmed organically. The wine aged for 18 months in a combination of puncheons and barriques. The nose offers blackberries, blueberries, black and white pepper and violets. The mouth is dense with abundant tannins and acid."

This dark wine shows a touch of bramble to the pepper tinged middle of Huckleberry fruit and some spice on the firm, dry finish. Big, deep, balanced and not over ripe, this throws off just a note of game and iron on the bold ending.

For those of you interested in a more serious, full-bodied red need look no further than this opulently styled Syrah from Jeremy Weintraubs Site Wines. The fruit is sourced exclusively from the legendary Bien Nacido Vineyard; the pride of Santa Maria. I can imagine giant slabs of tri-tip cooking over the open fire in preparation for a feast. This Syrah is built for just that occasion. The wine is sexy, juicy, and fully-fruited. It will not leave you wanting. Jerry has a natural feel for Rhone varietals and coxing the most out of his very selectively chosen vineyard “Sites”.

The nose of this wine is an intriguing blend of wet stone and spice and currently shows a bit of reticence in releasing all its aromatics now. On the palate the wine is surprisingly fresh, it has a supple, textural weight to it but isn't a thick, heavy example of California Syrah. The finish shows a bit of wet stone and a fair amount of structure, decant for an hour before drinking.

An explosive, powerful expression of one of the finest vineyards in California. The fabled Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria valley continues to prove itself as on of the most exciting and highly regarded sites in the country after some 46 years under vine. The list folks who pull fruit from here is a literal who's who of Central Coast icons each with massive scores from all major critics. Jeremy takes a small parcel of fruit from Block 4 (organically farmed) and rests it in French oak Puncheons and Barriques for 20 months. The wines is like a classic rendition for the varietal from the Northern Rhone with the dial turned up all the way! Very varietal aromas and flavors of smoked meat, black and blue fruits, dried herbs, warm soil, underbrush. As the wine opens in the glass richer, riper fruit comes through, exotic spices emerge and the tannins relax. It keeps unfurling with each sip. Seriously layered, deep wine. Wow!

Site Wines brings this Syrah from Bien Nacido Vineyard which is one of the coolest growing sites in Santa Barbara County which makes for a delicious and complex wine. This organically grown Syrah is 100% varietal, the nose is lightly savory with a violet backing. On the palate blueberry, blackberry and currant with a nice peppery spice at the end. The finish is lasting with nice acidity and elegant tannin. After tasting this Syrah I think I have a new go to while it lasts, get yours today!

After the Larner Red Wine and the Grenache, i was really excited to taste the Syrah from Site Wines. This one delivers, and then some. There’s tons of focus here. The dynamics, wind up like a coiled spring and explode on the palate. Tons of complexity and points of interest: a hint of savory, underlying reductive tones, well-integrated spice, cured meats, vanilla espresso. Not too tannic, but nicely structured. As with the other wines, there’s an excellent balance between bright acid and rich fruit. An incredibly well-made, bold Syrah that is sure to impress.
