K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "The 2014 Site Red Wine is a blend of grapes from Larner Vineyard. Syrah comprises 75%, Grenache 20% and Viognier 5%. The Syrah and Viognier portions were cofermented and aged for 18 months in small French oak barrels. The Grenache fermented separately and aged for 18 months in puncheon. The wine shows blue and red fruits, as well as spices and lavender. The mouth is delicate and voluptuous."

In the glass this wine is dark, brooding and made me think it was going to be monolithic, that's why color is so misleading this wine is super fresh and balanced! In the nose aromas are fresh, lots of dark fruit without being over-ripe. On the palate a freshness of fruit dominates, focus intrigue and spice add to the dark fruit. The finish shows lots of lift at the back end that gather the wine together and make it a really intriguing blend. Very solid wine.

With this bottling winemaker Jeremy Weintraub demonstrates his formidable blending skills taking Syrah (75%,) Grenache (20%) and Viognier (5%) and combines them into a focused torrent of brambly, exotic fruit, scorched earth, garrigue notes and rubbing spices. Concentrated and bursting with flavor but not overly heavy or extracted. There's a lovely balance of hedonistic fruit with savory undertones of smoked meat dried herbs. I think Rhone wine drinkers will enjoy this every bit as much as folks who typically look for California red blends. It's a perfect illustration of how this "site" can deliver richness and restraint when handled by a master in the cellar. Awesome stuff.

The quality on these wines is absolutely crazy; it's hard to believe that they keep getting better with every vintage--but they do. The 2014 Larner is a total stunner: dark, and meaty, hints of smoke and leather above a solid core of dark fruits: boysenberry, blackberry and caramelized cherry. For a big wine, the balance on this is just seamless. Despite nearly 70% of the blend being Syrah, the striking similarity to top shelf, modern styled Châteauneuf-du-pape is undeniable. This is a breakthrough wine that deserves serious attention.
